MORE OF COOKS RECORD
Special to the Gazette
Dallas Tex June 11 A gentle-
man well posted in the political history
of Texas said to day that sonfe years
ago Judge Cook made a speeoh at San
Marcos in whioh be denounced the free
school system of Texas as un-Demo-
o nnd exDressed bimselt as stronslv
ooed to it The same gentleman also
said that in and around Austin Judge
Cook was regarded as an enemy of the
state university A correspondent of
tbe Texas Farmer makes a similar
charge as witness the following under
an Austin date
I see Warwick Clark has brought out Gustave
Cook as a candidate for governor The man who
wanted to use the galling gun on the railroad
strikers at Fort Worth and now expects their
bosses to make them vote for him a man who is
constitutionally opposed to the public free
schools and the great Texas university would
make a fine covemor indeed G S llefly
bower
It will thus be soon that evidenoe is
accumulating daily to dhow that al-
though Judgo Cook is a present posing
before the people otTeXas as an apostle
of moderation be was in tbe years when
moderation was really needed tho con-
stant utterer of bitter and immoderate
words His record rising out of tbe
mists of the reoedlng past is proving
very confusing to himself and to those
who pulled him forth from the retire-
ment of private life into tbe heat and
turmoil of a campaign destined to be
not only an event but to mark the be-
ginning of a new era in the political his-
tory of Texas

cracy it was then ascertained by a
vote that only about fifteen of tbe dele-
gates favored a farmers nomination
A test vote was taken on the commission
and the governorship question and
there was not a man opposed to Hogg or
the commission As Hopkins county was
one of the seven that called out Judge
Cook it may be of interest to state that
the most reliable estimates giye this
county to Hogg and there is scarcely a
doubt that the delegates to tbe state

MUCH HOT
AcsTEf Tex June 14 1S90
Editor Gazette
Tho hot season Is on in dead earnest
hereabouts Tho high political temper-
ature seems to intensify the solar heat
In other words the quantity of animal
heat generated in Hoggs corporeal mass
together with the heat irradiated from
Halls rod head keeps tbe liquid in the
thermometer a Cooking
It is thought by some that Hoggs sur-
render of his railroad pass is not justified
Uy bis reasons given that he like other
officials accepted it only upon a mutual
understanding between himself and the
road of pure motives on the part of both
parties that the pass is bis property
-strictly upon tbls understanding alone
that the road is now out ot coutt in
pleading at this late day a considera-
tion not expressed Implied nor conceived
in tbe original understanding and
that Hogg is still legally and
morally entitled to ride on
his pass even if traveling
on a trip to prosecute the railroad com-
pany Hocg is in favor of tbe railroad
commission he also seems to favor the
short Hall But rather than come out
short Hail would rather Cook -the whole
Hogg in the soup Cook wants his
pork well done He thinks too that if
the red racer would nail off and give
him more carving room be could glut
tho whole market with pork chops
Meantime the swine seem to be heading
towards the clover field and the road
ahead looUs down grade But tho head-
light is no where in view and tbe feast
is not yet so the culinary artist is roast-
ing the pig very slowly Besides tbe
animal seems to be dreadfully tough
In fact they may never be nble to Cook
all the squeal and grunt out of it at all
and when tbey gather arouud the bird
on the day of the feast some of them
may eren Imagine they hear it caw
caw I
In any event hit or mies lose or
win there is going to be a railroad com-
mission but there will be no more free
transportation nor cut rates on a cer-
tain class of livestock F Wxty

Special to the Gazette

Judge Gustave Cook and all concerned
The Gazette correspoudeut by permli
slon of that clever gentleman Maj
Holmes private secretary to Gov Ross
to day examined the applications for ap-
pointment on tbe railway commission
during the pendency of tbe bill beforo
the last legislature and which are on file
in the governors otlice No application
from Cook appears among them Them
Is however a reoommendntion from Sen-
ator Abercrombie to Governor Ross dur-
ing tbe legislature suggesting Judge Cook
as a member ot the commission for codi-
fying the laws ot Texas a bill for which
was then pending Maj Holmes states
that this application which bears Judge
Cook 8 name at the head accidentally
got mixed up with the railway commis-
sion applications which has probably led
to the mistake that Cook had made an
application
Sensational rumors prevail on tbe
streets to night that tbe opponents of
Attorney General Hogg are trying to
substantiate a oharge against him In
connection with the late capitol syndi-
cate Attorney General Hogg having been
one ot tbe state board to receive tbo
building when finished Certain points
in tbe story including alleged statements
made by Contractor Wince to Architeot
Bell and Abner Taylor before he left
Austin are deemed too libelous to appear
in a Texas journal Tho attorney-generals
friends here say his record in
the capitol matter will bear the most
searching investigation and point to
the fact that ohieliy through his exer-
tions the Chicago syndicate were forced
to expend 40000 on tbo statehouse
