TnertE la no question but what there
Is a great deal of barm arising from
tho distinctive American trait of
hurry and worry This evil has bad
n noticettblo effect on tho lives of
business men as it Is fact that in no
country in the world do men grow old
eo fast as here
The American plan of business
founded as It is upon rush and pusn
hurry and hurrah is at best a grnld
ing systom wearing away the lives of
participants In it and tho question
arises How can socio rcl < ba
found from this constant taxing to the
uttermost of tho strength and ability
Amebican men of money seldom or
never travel in their own country to
admire its scenery but only to spy
out the land for Investments in real
cstata railroads lumber and minerals
It is about time that the fashion should
chango and permit a study of tho na-
tional natural treasures which will
well repay a visit
Mebc beauty noeds no appeal it
makes its own But there is noth
1 ing < alter nl so vulvar and
wearisome as physical charm without
adequate harmony of mind and heart
Wo should prefer that all our proclo
matlons should bo for tho develop-
ment of feminine harmony rather than
tho conservation of bodily beauty
The averago American business
man has a groat fault which comes
as a necessary result attendant upon
his dally custom of attaching a sec-
ondary value to everything which
docs cot carry with it a tangible
profit in tho shapo of a dividend pay
able in gold and this Is tho fact that
owing to tho overwork of tho day he
carries homo his business disappoint-
ments and failures to be vented In a
pleasure destroying potulaacy which
Is suro to destroy tho opportunity for
the rest and homo comfort which
tired nature so much needs and craves
To get ones namo written with
eomo credit on tho pages of ones
town or stato is an ambition which is
commendable To leavo behind as
stoma have done or to set up during
hsliietlrae some monument which
will give pleasure or inspiration or
help to somebody else that is a glori-
ous ambition But to buld a marble
pyramid a great pile of O mb stone
to obstruct the earth and hinder the
planting of corn and potatoes is a
conspicuous illustration of human
folly not to say meanness That sort
of a memorial makes intelligence
laugh and evokes pity or execration
from true humaneness
Bome years ago It was generally ac-
cepted that electricity was a current
flowing through or along a wire or
other good conductor exerting a forco
at tho point of exit just as in the cose
of water or air passing through a
tube This was too material a con-
ception notwithstanding the fact it
could cot bo demonstrated and tha
obscure term of force was substituted
This bas sicca been allowed to stand
while the vain search for its causo
was continued Now that electricity
has become so important an clement
in tha mechanical welfare of tho
Torld efforts to uncover tho mystery
of its existence bavo been redoubled
f The stoady increase of tho French
Canadians in tho rural district o
New England and In our great man-
ufacturing centers has been con-
stantly noted In recent years and tbo
boast has been made that this popula-
tion from tho north would in time
supplant tho natives population Be-
tween tha IrishAmericans who now
represent nearly onohalf tho popula-
tion of Boston and tho FrenchCan
adiani who cow count up in New
England in round numbers to nearly
iOftOOQ the time is not far distant
when the ratlve New Englander will
ba terribly squeezed In the struggle
for existence when Unless these for-
eign races are thoroughly assimilated
or Americanized wo shall have great
difficulty in maintaining tho integri-
ty of our civil Institutions
It is undoubtedly necessary that in
the machinery of the law or for its
enforcement there should be a class
of men whoso duty it should bo to
trace criminal and who by practice
and the study of trifles bat would
noss tho eye of the unobservant and
Inexperienced man can follow a trail
through a crowded city as accurately
as would tha Indian through tho un-
broken forest But there is danger
that tbeso men or some of them at
least are actuated by other motives
than thoso of bringing the criminal to
uttica or upholding tho dignity of
iho law Probably thero are not
many who would be ready to protect
tbo criminals if they could share In
the profits of tho crime and there aro
ess vbo would instigate him to
Time for their own pecuniary benefit
Hut such cases have been known
Tuebe arc two things that do seri-
ously wear1 upon all workers one
is a position of responsibility which is
complicated by continual contact and
inevitable friction with tho varying
wills and dispositions of other ocoplo
as for instance the work of pubtio
srhool teaching Hero the teacher
iiai before him the problem of har-
monious relations with fifty or more
inreasonnble lndividualtiei and tho
further duty of mantaining with all
their parents such relations as best
conduce to the good of tho pupils nnd
the problem also of meeting the re-
quirements nnd holding the respect of
the school authorities the head-
master tho supervisor tho board of
education In private schools the con-
ditions aro somewhat simplified and
concern in tho main only pupils and
parents But in all occupations whore
tbo worker has to do with a mora or
less complicated tribunal I hero Is a
tax on nervous forco that may well re-
quire seasons of complete and oven
protracted rest to recupcrsto tha en-
ergies
