It is strange how little people
value kind words and a pleasant
countenance. If we knew their
real value we would prize them
far more than the accomplish-
ment of art or music that we have
studied for years to master. We
cannot estimate the magic power
of a kind word spoken in a gentle
voice, neither can we tell how
deep an unkind word spoken may
enter into an already overburden-
ed heart. “A shot at random
sent may find a mark the archer
little meant, and a word at ran-
dom spoken may soothe or
wound a heart that’s broken.’’
Why not study the art of unself-
ishness and kindness? We need
no instructor, neither is it any
expense; only a little sacrifice
and determination—what a great
profit for so little cost. Forget;
ye* we forget; out would we not
soon forget our music or any
other accomplishment if we did
not practice? When we start out
on several errands we put them
down in our note book so we will
not forget. Why not write in
plain letters so we will not tail to
see, and read them over just be-
fore starting: ."Remember to be
kind and pleasant to those whom
I meet.” And when you return
and read your notes over'to see
if you have forgotten anything,
don’t fail to stop and think if you
forgot to be kind, if you failed to
speak—or did you speak so cold-,
ly that it was not appreciated^
You may not succeed at first, but
do not become discouraged. Re-
member the old adage, and a true
one, ’‘Practice makes perfect.”
