capped cancer, hardening of the
arteries and other research proj-
ects in laboratories across the
country.
Lack of exact knowledge of hor-
mones and cholesterol and how
these steroidal substances are
transported in the blood has ham-
pered research both at Southwest
Foundation and other major re-1
search centers.
The Gustavis and Louise Pfeif-
fer Research Foundation estab-
lished a year-long research grant
at Southwest Foundation to start
the first basic research to be
done in this field.
Work will start immediately and
I be directed by Dr. Melvin Ny-
I man, an expert in steroid chem-
■ i istry who advises on chemical
1S j aspects of the Foundations med-
ical and biological research.

Southwest Foundation recently
received the largest grant ever
given by the U. S. Health De-
partment for research relating to
heart disease. Other research
projects now underway at South-
west Foundation include research
on cancer, hardening of the ar-
teries, muscular dystrophy, ways
of combatting radiation damage
and problems of reproduction and
male sterility.
