JAMES II SHELBURNE
On tho 377th ballot the LaGrango
congressional convention nominat-
ed James II Sholburno as their
choice for congress Tho voto had
stood Shelburne 22 Dull 22 and
Volncy Ellis G
Thursday morning a telegram
was received by tho Lavaca dele-
gation from Volncy Ellis aflking
that his numo bo withdrawn and
that the delegation cast its voto for
some man in strict accord with
the Chicago platform Tho can
cus of the Burgess and Shelburne
mon lasted for more than an hour
and Shelburne insisted on Austin
county giving Burgess at least ono
complimentary vote Thit > how-
ever tho Austin delegation refused
to do and it was whispered about
that the delegation was not faith
ful to Shelburne but was holding
back with a viow to getting an op-
portunity to voto for a gentleman
whoso namo had not been men-
tioned Austins vote would havo
nominated Burgess and after Shel
burne tried to throw tho county to
him Burgess in turn asked his
friends to vote for Shelburne as-
suring them that ho was entirely
out of it and that ho Shelburne
was his choice Ho earnestly urged
thot his followers stay with Shol
burne
Judgo Robson went beforo tho
caucus and said it was not a fact
that he was a dark horse as report-
ed but that if neither Burgess nor
Sholburno could get tho nomina-
tion and it was tendered him ho
would accept it or words to that
effect Lavaca was the bone of
tention and the delegation split
some being willing to vote for
Sholburno and others holding back
The caucus lasted for more than an
hour v i
When the convention recon-
vened tho 337th ballot was taken
and Lavaca voted for Shelburne
giving him 28 vbtes and tho nomi-
nation Before tho ballot was
completed Lewis Bryan moved to
nominate Sholburno by acclatna
tiod and the motion prevailed
Amid the greatest applause Shel
burne ascended the platform and
thanked tho convention in a fool-
ing manner Ho said he was sure
to go to Washington if ho lived
and that it would be tho first time
ho had evor been out of tho state
having beon born in Industry Aus-
tin county lie promised to re-
present the district to tho best of
his ability
Burgess was loudly called for
and made an excellent speech He
eulogized Shelbourne speaking of
his rugged honesty and urged
every democrat in tho district to
put on his armor and go forth to
battle for tho nominee something
ho promised to do with the great-
est cheerfulness and earnestness

Cigarette smokera are threatened
with another terror This is the
so called cigarette lip It is
claimed by tho inventor of this
mysterious term that tho habit of
perpetually holding a oigarotto be-
tween tho lips causes tho upper lip
to project over tho lower ono Tho
scientist who haB lighted upon this
discovery says Among tho sav-
age Africans a prominent and pro-
tuberant upper lip is produced by
inserting a wooden ring in a slit in
tho lip and increasing tho size of
tho ring from time to time The
same effect isattained in enlight-
