Going to the Circus
Tho contrary mulo story last
week caused a great many laughs
but tho best thing wo have heard
was how the boys went to tho cir-
cus We tell it as it was related
by Henry Wiseman now at Fort
Davis
Along about the timo spoken of
in the story last week it was an-
nounced that a great circus was
coming to Gonzales Flaming
posters adorned all tho walls and
fences telling iig Tho Greatest
Show on Earth UlThero wore pic
tuies of wild beasts monkeys
wholo cages of snakesand then
there was the bareback rideis all
dressed in gaudy tights and
spangles The big pictuies sot all
the boys in the country wild and
theie was a great savibg up of
nickels and dimes for tho expected
show Heqry John and 1 Will
Wiseman werp just atthe right age
to enjp circus ts and they gave
their fattier no rest ilntil he con-
sented tolef thomUU go Henry
was nboutlS yearB old John Hi
and Will Id NoW Will had never
been a circus and he cotild haidly
sleep of nights for thinkingabout
it and wondering what it would be-
like i
As the daj s rolled slovyly by the
boys could haidly contain them
selves atid wero in a fever of
anxiety Test th6 weatlier should be
bad Theoveningbofoiothociicus
day Mr 1 Wiseman balled up the
boys and gavo them four bits
apiece1 the price of admission
Each boV stowed his money care-
fully away but Will to mako sure
got a string and tied up his money
in a knot at the bottom of his
pants pockct Heniy watohed
theso proceedings with a twinkle in
his eye w jiich meant mischief He
always was fond Of deviling his
brothers So that night whon
Will had gone to bed and got
sound asleep Hornby got up and
extracted Wills fourbit piece and
tied up a big flat button in its
place Tho button was just the
size of the money and nobody
could tell tho difference by feeling
Heiyy then went back to bed high-
ly elated with his joke
The next morning tho boys were
all up by daylight and were in 11
great hurry to get off Will felt in
his pocket to inaku suro the foui
bits was there and when he felt
tho button he thought it was all
right They could hardly take
time to eat breakfast they were in
such a hurry They had to ride
bareback to town Henry and
John had secured horses so the
contrary bay mule fell to Will
Hutta Littfclleld was also along we
believe tl wn8 fiftoen miles to

of Gonzales The bos could hear
tho band playing and could Bee the
banners and Hags waving Now
the bay mulo had behaved himself
very well up to this Ho had
never been known to balk when he
had company along so he was not
expected to make any bad breaks
But he had never heaid a brass
band before and tho sound filled
him with fear Ho suddenly con
cludtd that it would not be safe for
ho and Will to go any nearer town
and that tho best thing they could
do would be to g < 5 homo it onco
So givingia loud bray lie jerked hiB
tail up in tho air turned mound in
the roid and to Wills consterna
tion headed for homo at the top of
his speod
Ketch him head him off boys
screamed Will he s a goin to take
me home
The other boys at once gave
chase and did all they could to
stop the mule but he was dead sot
on going home and they had to
run him four or five uiileB befoie
they could head him oil and rope
him By this time Will was in
tears and everybody was in awhile
heat Tho return to town was
slow and laborious the mule hav-
ing to be led by one boy while
another boy rode behind and
pounded him with a club Finally
they got into town and headed for
tho circus grounds The parade
was oer and so they headed for
the ticket wagon to get into the
show The h or6es and tho contra-
ry mulo weie securely tied and
Henry led the way to tho wagon
Bande wero playing people shout-
ing and tho boys weie so wrought
up they trembled with excitement
Now boys said Henry when
they got to the wagon wheros
your money
Heres mine said Will and
turning his pocket inside out he
untied tho string Out rolled the
button Will gazed at it a moment
stupified with astonishment and
then with a howl of dismay he
threw it on tho ground and burst
into tears I cant get in ho
sobbed Ivo lost my four bits
boohoooo
Henry waited awhile so as to
enjoy the joko as long as possible
and then said 0 thats all right
