W In pursuance to a call of lire rail*
f road 30tumil lee, appointed by • lie
citiMus at a meeting held in Hie
mouth ot June last, to confer with
the mallageincut of the Tcttaz Wrat-
ern and ascertainnrlittt they #ould
require to construct their road to bur
towu, the citizens ol La Grange and
vicinity met ai the court houao at
7:90 |i. in., on the 26th iust., to hear
the re|Hirtof the committee.
Judge L. W. Moore, the chairman,
being absent, (Japl. W. H. Ledbetter
was called to the chair. Tne object
of the meeting tvaa explained, and
the proposition oft lie Texas Western
was sobiniucd by Mr. Uobsou, one of
the committee. The proposition of
tho company was accepted with the
modifications as shown by tho min-
utes ot the mcotiug published In an-
other column. The best of feeling
prevailed, and much outtiusiumn a ns
worked up in behalf of flio new en-
terprise. All seemed to realize the
fact that the Texas Western would
be of a greater benefit to La Grange
than the Sunset road, and that if they
sat idly by und permitted the road to
I run nortli of them, it would be the
f rain of the town. Reference was
made to other Texas towns, Helton
notably, which had laid back ou their
natural advantages, under the belief
that the roads would bo compelled to
build to them, aud refused to do any-
thing or extend airy encouragement
to them, and thereby lost th»V roads,
aud ruined their towns. If ilie clti-
/ /.cns of La Grange become byjl ha ailed
I and dissensions spring up in her own
household, we may look for the same
result for her. It is to bo imped that
our cilizons will rise above any per-
sonal or selfish consideration, and
work together for the accomplishment
of the oiie end, to secure llie const ruc-
tion of the road to La Grange.
The proposition of the road is not
unreasonable, and is one which our
town can comply with, it must bo
admitted that whatever will benefit
tho town generally, will benefit also
overy citizen in the town, whether ho
be a property owner or not. Then is
j there a poison in La Grange ,who
' , would throw himself across the path*
* way that leads to her prosperity ?
Wo believe not. But while you will
do nothing against the enterprise, you
can /el do it an injury by remaining
inactive. Lethargy is generally more
disastrous than opposition, and it now
becomes the duty of overy citizen to
put his shoulder to the* Wheel, and
assist the committee in their labors.
From what is known of the commit-
tee, a wiser selection could, not, have
boon made, nor men who would exort
themselves morn for tho accomplish-
ment of the objoct for which they
were appointed, Ilian tho gentlemen
who coinposo tho railroad committee.
But remember that they uro power-
loss without your co-operation,and as
a committee can do but little without
(lie assistance ot uvory citizen of La
Grange. Then let us bo up and doing,
with a determination that knows no
such thing as tail. It is now an ad-
mitted fact that a powerful influence
is being brought* to hour, and unusual
inducements ofl'urud to divert the road
from the line ns now nut, to go around
our town, and unless-wu do our best
La Grauge will soon be buried in her
own ruins. Wo have not only iu>li j
vidtinl influence to light, but also that i
— of a powerful corporation. Then lei |
