A Committee from the grand jury
examined tho county jail last week
but we have not as yet beard their
report. If tbeir report is what it
should be-they would say that what

disgrace to o:>r county and is a far
worse place of confinement than

During the past few days we have
conversed with citizens from all parts
of our couuty in relation to crops,
and almost all of them agree that the
prospect for fine crops iu this conuty,’
Is flattering. Iu the neighborhood of
Sohulenburg some of our friends in-
form ns that tor a while they had too
much rain, but that, the post week
has been such flue weather that crops
are rapidlv recovery from the efrects
of the previous wot weather. Tak-
ing into considering the March freeze,
our farmers, one and all, say that the
oat-look Is exceedingly promising

Personal.—M. Gockrili, of the
firm of Tuttle and Cocknli, Flatonia
is in town on the petit Jury. “Chig”
says he is nor at leisure and express-
es a willingness to be “interviewed;”
hope he will keep in the notlou until
the last of the week.
Col, W. F. Upton, of Schnleuburg,
was in attendance on the court the
first of the week. The Colonel is as
fat and cheerful a* ever and soems to
beiu as good a condition to go through
another campaign ns he was two
years ago.
A. B. Kerr, Esq., has been in town
all week as a petit juror. He is
spoken of as a prospective candidate
to rfi^reseut Fayette oounty iu the
next legislature. We cennot vouch
for the truth of the report as he ha*
not announced yet.
Our friend George Robiuson, says
that before he got to be a “Miller” he
thought fliey ware exempt from jury
service, and were, for that reason, a
happy set of men. Since ho* went
into the mill business, one year ago,
he has only been called on twice to
serve iu tho district court as a regular
juror, aud now believes that being a
miller causes him to have to do.
double duty as a juror. He says, or
thiuks, that he will retire from the
business if they summon him to serrve
as a petit juror again witbiu the uext
twelve months. Never mind, friend
George, our jury comm Issiouere nro
always partial to millers like you.
