SUNRISE BEACH — This column
will be labeled an editorial be-
cause I am expressing an opinion
drawn after finally finishing three
weeks of back newspaper issues. The
subject (LASSO) could have a
significant impact on our community
because it concerns the use, or
possible abuse, of public funds.
The Kingsland Chamber of Com-
merce reportedly offers 100 percent
support to get a school in the lakes
area. "LASSO vows fight against
LISD bond,” reported another head-
line—it seems the group voted to
oppose any bond issue that tries to
expand the Llano campus and does
not provide for a school in the lakes
area. One article states the com-
mittee is also pursuing the pos-
sibility of forming a separate school
district in Kingsland to serve the
"entire lakes area.”
To an outsider, it would appear
LASSO has set themselves up as
representatives of all communities
stretching from Tow to Horseshoe
Bay. The map of Llano County makes
me wonder if the few miles saved by
most of the lake communities would
justify sending children to something
less than a full-service campus.
Possibly LASSO is the victim of poor
reporting, but goals and comments
covered by the media have con-
tained the taste of negativism.
The only positive articles con-
cerning the LISD—consideration of
the entire county and the pro-
posed bond issue—were written by
our representatives on the school
board. I choose to assume their
comments are sincere and serious
unless they prove otherwise at a later
date.
If my memory serves me, the call
during the last school board election
was for fiscal responsibility; when
the incumbents running for office
were ousted, a victory was pro-
claimed. Now it appears comments
from board members or school
officials that express a concern for
costs are summarily rejected by
LASSO unless their particular de-
mands are met.
Our county is unique in one aspect
most seem to ignore when it comes
to a discussion of taxes and tax rates.
We have the oldest population in the
state; with an average age in the 60s,
a high percentage of tax contri-
butions to school districts is frozen.
It behooves all of us to work
especially hard to get the most
benefit out of the least amount of
money. If we fail, we are going to tax
the young people we are supposedly
think about your heart.

The Lower Colorado River Authority, an agency
of the State of Texai, it seeking a developer or
developers to design, construct and operate com-
mercial recreational/retort developments on two
tracts of LCR A land in Central Texas. The devel-
opments should enhance the Central Texas area by
providing needed facilities and services to |he
public and should emphasize quality design, architec-
ture, operation and environmenul standards.
' The first tract, with 2100 feet of frontage on Lake
LBJ In Burnet County, it 17.08 acres. It is located
near the Horseshoe Bay resort, five miles south-
west of the City of Marble Falls, »"d is close to
major highways leading to San Antonio, Austin
i and other area cities.
The second tract, on Lake Buchanan In Llano
County, is 123 acres with 11.300 feet of lake
i frontage. It is located 16 miles northeast of the City
of Llano and is near major highways leading to San
Angelo, San Antonio, Austin and other area cities.

' trying to protect right out of the
county. If that happens, we
shouldn't blame our service indus-
tries for fleeing to Travis or Bexar
County where the average age of the
resident supporting a school system
is 21 to 25 years younger.
I am not opposed to school
facilities in the lakes area, but the
school board, made up of our duly-
elected officials, should be the body
forced to make the studies and stand
the pressures resulting from their
decisions. They are the ones charged
with the public responsibility to act
in the best interest of the entire
county. I don't believe any of us can
say the lake areas haven’t been well
represented for a good number of
years, and I remain unconvinced the
Llano rancher vs. lake resident
mentality has returned (I remember
the mid-’60s very well) to plague the
county. My biggest concern is
human nature and what frequently
happens when self-appointed ex-
perts try to superimpose provincial
views on chartered boards. If” a
school board member fails to per-
form in the best interest of the
county, that member can be voted
out. That guarantee is nonexistent
when dealing with independent
organizations.
I hope the papers are wrong, and
LASSO doesn’t deserve the reputa-
tion of denying nearly everything
affirmed or suggested by others. I
for one will continue to read their
press and pay a little more atten-
tion to what the members of the
legitimate school board have to say.
