Buchanan hazard 'delisted'
Search to continue on pollution source
BUCHANAN DAM — The Texas
Water Commission has approved 10
hazardous waste sites to be irfduded
on the commission’s first State
Superfund Registry. Four other sites
were "delisted." and one of those
was at Buchanan Dam. which
included an area around the inter-
section of SH 29 and RR 14.11, better
known as "Fuzzy’s Corner.”
TWC Public Information Director
Bill Colbert, interviewed by tele-
phone last Thursday, said the reason
for the removal of the Buchanan
Dam site was a lack of constituents.
t
Castell Happenings
"There were not enough there to
qualify for the program." Colbert
said. "The site has been referred to
the Underground Storage Tank Unit
in an effort to correct the problem."
One of the factors causing the
deletion was because there was not
enough concentration of the contam
inants. None of the tests indicated
"raw gasoline.” the components
which were detected in several water
wells in the area indicated there was
some leaking fuel somewhere in the
area. - -

Unit will make an effort to find the
source of the problem," Colbert
added. "There is evidently a tank
leaking somewhere in the area that
has not been found.”
The other deletions were the
Texas A&M Fire Training School in
Brazos County. Texas Plastics in San
Patricio County and Trio Mud in
Harris County.
In addition to the State Super-
fund Registry, there arc also 26
federal Superfund sites in Texas.

sidered to he threats to "the public or'

We have been having typical
Texas weather. Temperature in the
20s in early morning with thick frost
that resembles snow. By noon
beautiful sun reigns.
Sunday shortly after noon, we had
quite a bit of excitement. A fire (of
unknown origin) along the fence line
of James Hoffmann's field burned
into a group of round hay bales
before it could be extinguished. The
good part? The wind was not blowing
strongly. Volunteer fire fighters,
friends and neighbors are invalu
able.
At this writing (Sunday), Leroy
Rode is a patient in the local
hospital. Best wishes for a speedy
recovery.
And Bessie Grenwelge is still a
patient in the hospital. Our wishes
go to her, also.
The earth is God's training
