GOOD REFLECTION — The new gym floor at Llano
High School glistens like a mirror as Illustrated In this
freshman game between Llano and Burnet. Llano’s
Shannon Najar |30| Is having a little problem with the
I
Burnet defender, but will manage to get out of the Jam.
Other Llano players are Mary K. Foster f 14) and Gena
Hallmark (12). Llano won the game, 35-26.
V
Burnet beats Llano 66-40
i Llano boys’ basketball teams
played only one game last week, with
tie varsity boys losing to Burnet.
6&-40, the junior varsity losing,
53-45, and the freshmen boys
winning over Burnet, 50-40.
Bumet 66, Llano 40
The Burnet Bulldogs left no doubt
as to their intentions in this game, as
they forged a 17-7 lead in the first
period and moved ahead to a
commanding 34-12 lead at the half.
Llano picked up the pace in the third
period with Billy Crow and Chris
Mayben getting two baskets each.
Helping out were Tommy Bostick
and David Laxson with one each for a
12-point output. Unfortunately, Bur-
net was getting 19 points. Llano
outscored Burnet, 16-11, in the last
period as the Bulldogs cleared the
bench.
Crow scored 10 points, followed by
Laxson with 9, Mayben 6, Bostick 5,
Erich Grant and Steve Osbourn 4
each and Dickie Leyendecker 2.
Bumet 53, Llano 45
The Llano junior varsity team was
ju»* two points down with 30 seconds
left in the game (47-45), but nothing
would go right in those last 30
seconds as the Burnet Bulldogs hit
every basket and completed every
extra point. It was a close game as
the score was tied, 10-10, at the end
of the first period and Llano was
ahead. 24-23, at the half. Burnet
forged to a 36-32 lead at the end of
three periods before Llano closed to
within 2 points.
Leading Llano's scoring was John
Reitan with 12 points, Jim Simpson
10, Lance Dillard 9, Billy Ezell 6,
Corey Stovall and Eddy Lawson 4
each.
Llano 50, Bumet 40
Llano's Mike Brascom had a hot
hand in the 50-40 defeat of the
Burnet Bulldogs, sepring 21 points,
which was tops for both teams. The
Yellow Jackets started out slowly,
giving Burnet a 14-9 first-period
lead. In the second period, Brascom
found the range, zipping four
baskets while Derek Permenter was
deadly from the free-throw line,
adding 4 more points as Llano
powered back to trail by one point,
25-24.
The game grew more intense as
the score was tied at 34 each at the
end of the third period. Llano then
slammed the door shut on the
doghouse, limiting the Bulldogs to
just 6 points, while the Yellow
Jackets were getting 16 points
through the hoop for the victory.
Following Brascom’s lead of 21
points were Permenter with 12, Dane
Saucier 6, Derick Winfrey and Jeff
Kuykendall 5 each, and Kent 1.
Llano girls beat Ingram
The Llano varsity girls nearly
pulled one game out of the fire, only
to lose by one point, and they won
the second game last week by three
points, even though they went
scoreless in the third period, to make
it one of the more interesting weeks
in basketball, to say the least.
In the first game, the final score
was Burnet 35, Llano 34, and the
second game's score was Llano 45,
Ingram 42. Both games were played
away from home.
Bumet 35, Llano 34
Burnet took an early 12-6 lead over
the Jackettes in the first period and
appeared to have the game pretty
well under control. Llano managed to
gain one point in the second period,
but the Bulldogs had a 20-15 lead at
the half. By the end of the third
period, Burnet was even more
confident, leading by 28-21 before
the Jackettes made a run for the win.
Wynona Beesley scorched the nets
with 7 points, to lead the attack as
Llano ran up 13 points to just 7 for
Burnet. That was just one short for a
tie, and two for a win.
Beesley led all Llano scorers with
14 points, followed by Connie
Brandenberger and Terri Grenwelge

Freshmen girls stop Burnet
A feisty bunch of Llano freshmen
girls harassed a good-shooting Bur-
net team to come away with a 35-26
victory in a Tuesday night game at
Llano. A pressing defense that
forced numerous turnovers and some
very good rebounding efforts were
the keys to the victory.
Llano's Mary Kay Foster got most
of her 13 points driving fearless-
ly to the basket for easy lay-ups as
the taller defenders were not able to
get into position in time to try to
block the shots.
Kristine Beesley accounted for 8.
Shannon Najar and Gena Hall-
mark 4 each, Christie Chaney. Darla
Fleming and Becky Gonzales 2 each.
Flrat Period
Following the tip-off, Burnet drove
to the basket to get a quick 2 points.
Minutes later. Chaney evened the
score, and Beesley put Llano into the
lead. Foster added two free throws,
and Llano had a 6-2 lead before
Burnet rallied to tie the score.
Second Period
A jumper from the side bv Beesley
put Llano back in the lead, but
Burnet had the next 4 points to take a
12-8 lead. Chaney stepped to the line
for a one and one foul shot and
missed the first, but Beesley

snitched the ball on the rebound to
score 2 points. Hallmark came
through with a basket to tie the game
at 12 ea?h. Beesley put Llano back irn^
the lead, and Burnet tied again at 14.
It was all Llano the rest of the way,
as Najar nailed a basket, followed by
Foster to give Llano an 18-14 lead at
half-time.
Third Period
Hallmark got Llano off on the right
foot with 2 points to extend Llano's
lead to 20-14. Burnet made two free
throws, and Foster countered with
one free throw and a basket to give
Llano a 23-16 lead. From there on to
the end of the third period, Llano
would score two baskets -to- one for
Burnet, and they built a com-
manding 2*7-18 lead, with Burnet
getting the last shot of the third
period.
Fourth Period
With Llano coach Danny Stovall
hollering, "Don't foul; don't foul;"
Fleming picked up 2 points to give
Llano a 9-point lead. Llano picked up
a technical foul, which Burnet
completed. The technical was be-
cause one of the Llano players had
her hair up in braids. That draws a
technical the same as if you were
wearing anv form of jewelry.
Llano's largest lead came with
baskets by Najar and Foster to make
the score 33-21 with a little more
than two minutes left in the game.
Burnet tired to rally, scoring five
straight points, but Foster cut the
rally off with another basket. The
game ended with Burnet missing a
one and one free throw.

Llano 45, Ingram 42
It was a torrid first half for Llano.
In the first period. Llano outscored
Ingram, 13-12, but in .the second
period, the Jackettes could do no
wrong as they blistered the nets for
23 points to take a commanding
36-22 lead.
It was a good thing the Jackettes
had a 13-point advantage because in
the third period they failed to score a
single basket and missed two
one-and-one free-throw opportuni-
ties while Ingram was scoring 10
points to cut the lead to 36-32. The
last period was nip and tuck with
Llano's finally getting back on track
to win the game by 3 points.
Osbourn was the top scorer with
17 points, followed by Beesley with
8, Lori Kolb 7, Duncan 5. Grenwelge
-4, Johnna Templeton 3 and Nancy
Ratliff 1.
