for the day:
Remind us that good luck
has a way of smiling on
the diligent and turning
its back on the lazy.
Dr. Charles McKinney from Mid-

We were among the more than 100
persons who paid tribute to Gertrude
Grote last Sunday. Gertrude had
officially retired as church organist
of 61 years. After the regular
service, a reception enabled every-
one to visit with her and show love
and appreciation for dedicated ser-
vice. A beautifully framed tribute
was presented Gertrude, as well as
floral arrangements. Many relatives
from out of town were present as
well as friends from neighboring
churches.

LASSO
impossible for the working parent.
“What is a solution?” One would
be to locate a K-5 school in the lakes
area to ease the long bus ride
situation.
The facts are that an area bounded
by Lake LBJ on the east. Highway 71
on the west, the county line on the
south and Highway 29 on the north
comprises 14 percent of the county.
This 14 percent of Llano County land
mass contains over 63.7 percent of
the county tax base, 62 percent of
registered voters in the Llano ISD
(LISD) and 51 percent of registered
voters for the entire county. The 14
percent also contains over 32 percent
of the present school population.
F’rojections in a report by Dr. Dennis
Hamer that was done for the LISD
school board show the lakes area
school population increasing over a
10-year period and Llano school
population decreasing over the same
period.
LASSO opposes a $2 million bond
issue to build any classrooms and
make renovations of existing build-
ings in Llano. The reason: A lack of

planning. On Nov. 13, 1986, LASSO
asked LISD to consider forming a
committee of Llano County resi-
dents and school board members to
form a master plan with considera-
tion given to a K-5 school for the
lakes area by 1990. LISD was to have
a report ready by January, 1987, No
action was taken by the school board.
Superintendent Moore stated at a
LASSO meeting, "Not in the near
future or the far future is there any
school planned for the lakes area. "
There are no visible plans for
financing for extra teachers, buses,
books or administration of new
school rooms and facilities such
the cafetorium., The same things
were expressed as a reason a school
in the lakes area was not feasible.
LASSO asserts that these costs
will have to be considered whether in
Llano or the lakes area and that 14
percent of the county will be
expected to be responsible for
paying for at least 63.7 percent of the
bond with no consideration
for a school in that area. That 63.7
percent equals at least SI .3 million of
the bond. The question raised is: If
Llano County residents want support
from the lakes area on this bond
issue, would they be willing to pay
for a school in the lakes area at a
later date?
The next LASSO meeting will be
on Monday. February 16, at Kings-
land National Bank meeting room
from 7:30 to 9 p.m. All interested
Llano County residents are invited to
attend. __
