Daniel Major McQary was one
of the oldest and boBt known news
paper men in Texas We knew him
that in Brenham in 1807 when he
waB publishing tho Baunur and n
kinder or more wholesouled gen-
tleman wo have never met
Mr McQary was born in Hopkins
county Kentucky rfbout seventy
years ago Ho first wont to Neb
raska and thence en mo to Texas
He served in the Confederate army
and his record ns u soldier was good
After the war he settled at Brenham
where he established tho Banner
The town was held by the Fedorals
at tho time and the editorials of the
paper were marked moro by truth
than policy and the editor was noon
thrown in jail Ho continued to
write and the matter was printed
This was not satisfactory to the
authorities and the ofQco was burned
together with a large part of the
town Thero has been pending in
congress for many years a claim
for damage done but there has
been no action on it After the
fire and his release from prison
Major McGarv came to Houston
where he established the Ago niyl
continued its democratic policy
until the day of his death though
in the meantime its habitat had
been changed from Houston to
Walliaville and thence to Beau-
mont
