CHRISTMAS,
Back at Pequeno’s, whose real
name was Aiejandro Trevino, the
pace was picking up. Men from
San Diego, La Rod ta, and La Qnoa
were arriving to get their hair
trimmed, faces shaved and shoes
shined. They were generous on
this day. Everyone tipped
Martinez, Pequeoo and me. I could
count on earning as much as $8,
but they would behardearned from
8 a.m. to8pjn. 1 charged fifteen
cents per shine. Black and brown
shoes were fast todo. but two toned
wing shoes were harder (brown
and white, black and white). These
elegant and fastidious men usually
wore white silk socks also, remind-
ing me always to be careful not to
stain them. There would be no
charge if 1 did.
Fequeno’s barber shop had to
be the most popular shop in town.
He was a very good barber, fast
and smooth, and known for his
singing talent. In stature, Pequeno
was tall and “goido”, and a con-
noisseur of good liquors and beer.
In between customers, Pequeno
would down a long neck bottle of
Peal beer, which customers would
buy for him. On a given signal
from Tlo Pequeno, I would run
over to the C.O.D., where Ho
Leocadio would wrap two of those
beer bottles in newspaper, ready
for delivery to Pequeno. It was a
known fact that as the day pro-
gressed, Pequeno’s hand would
become more steady and Ids songs
more melodious as he clipped away
hair and shaved faces. There were
also customers who looked for-
ward to alleging, harmonizing with
Pequeno. Alberto “Papotas” Gar-
cia was particularly good at this.
Their favorite songs were those
composed by Agustin Lara, such
as ‘'Solamente Una Vez” and
“FaroUto".
Pequeno and Manuel always
looked forward to Christmas Day.
Their customers were generous
men who would bring gifts - usu-
ally boxes of chocolate covered
cherries, fruit cakes and liquors,
Four Roses, El Presidente, Tequila
Cuervo. Pequeno’s face, with a
thin white moustache, was frill of
smiles all day long. If he would
have had a long white beard,
Pequeno would have made an in-
\ t lenesting Santa Claus.
The customers came from all
walks of life. Ranchers from La
Choim and La Rosita, politicians,
diputsdps, court employees, car-
penters; rich and poor; pranksters
and serious minded. All were char-
acters - unforgettable personalities.
There was Pedro “Pete” Saenz, well
dressed, a walking encyclopedia,
and sharing the latest Jokes; George
B. Parr, a good tipper, arrogant,
loud, rich, and the center of atten-
tion whenever he showed up; die
Barrera-Canante brothers, experi-
enced and educated, always add-
ing spice to the conversation; frail
looking and delicate Enrique de
Leon; the musicians, the Romano
Brothers (Carlos and Paco), Juan
Colorado, Steve Dunn, and
Reynaldo San Miguel.
I was fortunate to have worked
in Pequeno’s Barber Shop and
meeting so many colorfril figures.
Their lives, their experiences, their
wisdom added to my appreciation
and understanding of human na-
ture.
The bather shop would close
at 8p.m. Many would go home and
prepare to attend La Misade Gallo.
All, however, would go home to
enjoy tamales, pan de polvo and
bunuelos. The children would go
to bed early in anticipation of
Christmas morning and the open-
ing of gifts.
The barrio where I lived was
rich in friendship, good neighbors,
generous and kind people. Christ-
mas morning saw a rush of criss-
crossing neighbors, carryingplates
of cakes, pan de polvo, tamales,
and candies. It was a scene to
behold - ftiD of color, smiles and
exchanges of “Feliz Navidad”. I
can see themonce more, my ndgh-
