Plane Contest

More than three million Amer
lean youngsters, the great ma-
jority of them boys, were today
guaranteed an opportunity to put
their aeronautical knowledge and
skill at work to good advantage
in competing for a chance to
attend the 1st International Mod-
el Plane Contest announced for
August 13, 14, 15 and 16 at De-
troit.
The international contest is
made possible through the an-
nouncement by Joseph E. Bayne,
general sales manager of Ply-
mouth Motor Corp., a subsidiary
of Chrysler Corp., that Plymouth
will act as sponsor.
The meet will be held in con-
junction with the Aero Club of
Michigan and with the sanction
of the Academy of Model Aero-
nautics. Six thousand dollars in
cash prizes plus 93 trophies will
await winners of 30 separate
contests.
* Five hundred model plane
builders, the cream of the United
States’ and foreign countries’ ex-’
perts will be invited to attend
the meet. Selection will be made
on a merit basis from records
established in authorized state
and local contests, where such
are held, and from certified
statements of model "time aloft”
performance. There is no entry
fee.
First step toward invitation to j
the 1st International Contest is
for model aircraft builders to
write directly to: Headquarters
1st International Model Plane
Contest, Box 658, Detroit, Mich.
Entry blanks will be mailed out
to applicants shortly after May
15.
Approximately two - thirds of
the contestants will be drawn
from the twelve to twenty-one
year age group, both boys and
girls being eligible. The re-
mainder will come from model
builders over twenty-one, a class
whose background made them
outstanding both in military
flying and aircraft construction
work during the last war.

Properties Of Ammonium Nitrate
As It Pertains To Fire Started
Twenty-two eminent leaders on
the Texas livestock scene were
named today as officials and su-
perintendents of the forth com-
ing livestock shows at the State
Fair of Texas, October 19.
The announcement was made
by Ben E. Cabell, general Chair-
man of the State Fair Livestock
Committee. “The State Fair is
indeed fortunate.” Mr Cabell said,
“in securing the services of these
outstanding leaders for the 1947
show.”
The officials are: Dean W.
L. Stangel of Texas Technologi-
cal College, General Livestock
Superintendent; A. L. Smith of
College ^Station, Assistant Gen-
eral Superintendent of beef cat-
tle; G. G. Gibson of College Sta-
tion, Assistant General Super-
intendent of Dairy Cattle; B. J.
Baskin of Bryan, Livestock Show
Clerk; and Dr. W. G. Brock of
Dallas, official veterinarian.

1947, were 23,954 compared with
23,653 for same week in 1946.
Cars received from connections
totaled 10,761 compared with 9,-
777 for the same week in 1946.
Total cars moved were 34,715
compared with 33,430 for same
week in 1946. Santa Fe handled
a total of 35,742 cars in preceding
week of this year.

As a result of the Texas City
disaster, a new research project
covering the properties of am-
monium nitrate that are signi-
ficant as regards fire and explo-
sion hazards will be undertaken
by Underwriters Laboratories,
Inc., which is sponsored by the
National Board of Fire Under-
writers.
In announcing this project, W.
E. Mallalieu, General Manager of
the National Board, states that
the Laboratories in Chicago,
which are the recognized research
authorities in the field of fire
and explosion hazards and alj de-
vices and materials, including in-
dustrial chemicals, their manu-
facture and transportation, will
seek the cooperation of any other
| organizations that may be of
j assistance in this work.
Alvah Small, President of Un-
derwriters Laboratories, in out-
lining the new project states:
“Two somewhat related . re-
search projects have been hand-
led previously. The earlier one
of these is the subject of a Re-
search Bulletin which relates to
the use of ammonium nitrate
as a fertilizer base; the later
one was conducted for the ac-
count of the War Production
Board which has now consented
to our publication of our report
as a Research Bulletin, the print-
er’s copy for which is in prepa-
ration. It so happens that in
neither of these reports is there
account of exploration of am-
monium nitrate per se with re-
spect to the possibility of detona-
tion from fire exposure.
