AFTER TAX DODGERS
Mcdonald has his eye on two
sections of law
OWNERS MUST MAKE OATH
Penitentiary If They Lie Assessor
MUst Give Up 50 If He Falls to
Get the Oaths
Austin Tex Capt V J McDonald
state revenue agent liab boon investi-
gating tax matters in this state and
says ho has discovered some of tho
causes for tho present deficiency Ho
says that a full rendition of nl taxa-
ble property at fair value3 followed
by closo collection of tuxes would
very mileilally change the present
conditions
Article EOJS Revised Statutes cit
1895 requires property owners to tpn
der and Mvrar to coirect llcts of all
property subject to taxation A false
afddavlt tosuch lists Is punlshablo by
Imprisonment in the penitentiary
Article 5100 provides that If the as-
sessor fails to requlro property own
ers to Bubscribo and swear to such
list he tho tax assessor shall for-
feit to tho county 50 to bo deduct-
ed out of his commissions for each
such failure
Capt McDonald says that he Intends
to follow up these two articles and to
see that praporty owners who wil-
fully swear falsely in rendering theli
pioperty shall bo Investigated by the
graud juries of this state He in-
tends also to see that tax assessors
do their duty In regard to the nboo
nrticles so that those who may be
Indicted under this law for false sweat-
ing cannot escape on tho ground that
the assessor did not administer tho
oath
Severe penalties are also Imposed
upon those charged with the duty ot
collecting occupation taxes and the
stato revenue agent intends to enforce
this law
Thoso who know Capt McDonald
aio ready to testify that thorn will
be trouble unless the tax lawd ara
strictly obeyed
