Former Resident
Visits In Levelland
Mrs. A. J. Oden of Pasadena,
Calif., left Levelland Saturday after
a five-day visit here with her neph-
ew, Leonard Morris, and a friend,
Mrs. Charles H. Michael, sr. In
California for the past three years
Mrs. Oden formerly lived in Level-
land, and she still owns local proper-
ty.
The Californian came back to
Hockley county by train on a busi-
ness-pleasure trip. Mrs. Oden said
Saturday that her visit had been
completely pleasant—with the ex-
ception of the sand. "You know ”
she cdmmented, “I didn’t recall this
South Plains sand being so gritty,

Morrison Brothers team of Odessa,
that holds membership In the fast
Oil Belt League, has changed mana-
gers since thev played the Refiners
here last Sunday, according to Roy
Scudday. sports editor of the Odessa
American. ,
Scudday says:
"Word has been received that Al-
4 ton Bostick, fiery and hard-working
backstop and tutllity field^r-infield-
er of the Odessa baseball team has
been appointed new manager BU!
Keene resigned because he lives so
far from town it has been hard for
him to assume responsibility for
practices and what not.
One of the first things Alton did
in taking over was to issue an in-
vitation to all persons interested to
try out for the team.
Last Sunday at Levelland the
team had barely enough players to
go on the field, and one of them,
Settles had an injured knee so sere
he could barely, get around.
We know there are enough good
t ball players in this town to mak;
up a team good enough to win this
Oil Belt League. So all you ball
and would-be ball players, come on
out to the practices and give Bos- I
tick your support in thg drive to
give Odessa a good team. Boys of
high school age are especially invit-
ed.
Members of the Texas Sports I

the all-star basketball and football
games.

And now we have a letter from
our good friend Dub King of the Bdrt
Worth Star-Telegram sports staff
asking us to find an 18-year-old
baseball player. The player will be
announced liter in this column.
•King’s letter:
‘Dear Mr. Vestal:
I need your help In finding an 18-
year-old baseball player to make the
trip to Brooklin for the World All-
Star Amateur Series in August.
As you probably know, the boy
must be a high school graduate, an
amateur, must not reach his 19th
birthday until after August 5, 1946
and must not be playing American
Legion baseball this summer.
Will you please send me namen of
any exceptlonaly outstanding young
baseball players whom you have seen
or heard about in that area who fall
Into the catagory in above para-
graph. Also, please send names of
their teams and when it would lie
possible for me to come out and per-
sonally see them in action.
I plan a trip out that way the
latter part of June. I must select
the best player In Texas by July 15,
and have him In Brooklin by July 31,
1946.
Your help in uncovering an out-
standing prospect will be greatly
appreciated. Sincerely. Dub King,
sports department, Port Worth Star-
Telegram."
Please send names of any boy that
you think is a good prospect to the
writer of this column, Lois H. Vestal.
