some guts."
That's what Judge Brown means when he says
malice may be inferred from acts done and words spoken,
and shows a heart regardless of social duty.
I happen to recall the words of a brilliant
young leader, who could not be here today by any pos-
sibility, who said, "Ask not what your country can do
for you -- ask what you can do for your country."
I ask, "what has Jack Ruby done for his country
What has he done for this country, after now professing
the great love that he had for his president Kennedy?"
We happen to believe in this country, that we
have a government of law, not of men, and that means
that every person, no matter how vile the crime, no
matter how impelling the evidence, will before being
punished be presumed to be innocent.
And there, as he was showing all the world,
"That us Jews have guts, " that was when he showed the
world that a man named Lee Harvey Oswald couldn't have
a trial, and thatthese basic tenets of American liberty
for which your ancestors and my ancestors have died and
bled, that that has become meaningless at the hands of
Jack Ruby.
I say to you that he was sane then and he is
sane today.
