Loocks Leap
To State Title
At Tyler Meet
Oldest and youngest Texas
state diving champs are Convair
Fort Worth’s Carl J. Loock and
his 11-year-old daughter Vicki.
The Loocks latched onto their
new state diving titles at the
recent Texas Amateur Athletic
Federation meet in Tyler.
Loock, twice winner of the
state title, competed in the men’s
senior three-meter diving. Young
Vicki, who’s been swimming like
a duck since she was three years
old, won her first state cham-
pionship in diving competition
for those 15 years and under.
The 45-year-old Loock also
took top honors in three-meter
diving at last month’s Fort
Worth swimming meet.
One Fort Worth newspaper
reporter described Loock’s div-
ing championship “equivalent to
Joe Louis’ coming out of retire-
ment to start a heavyweight
comeback or to Ben Hogan’s win-
ning the Colonial Tournament at
age 50.”
CRA Chessmen
Down Expert
Four Convair Fort Worth
chess players downed Kell Terry,
United States Chess Federation
expert, at the CRA clubhouse
last week.
Terry took on 19 different
chess boards simultaneously. He
was defeated four times, drew
two games and still came out
winning the remaining 13.
“We had the largest turnout
we’ve had in ages,” Commission-
er R. W. Wooten commented.
“Not only did the Convair chess
players show up, but we had
several from the Fort Worth
Chess Club.”
Wooten said chessmen didn’t
leave the CRA until the midnight
curfew.
Starting next month, CRA
chess people will meet on the
third Friday of each month. The
club has been meeting on the
third Wednesday of each month.
Next item on the chess sche-
dule is a tournament planned
for September.
When asked if Terry might
make a repeat performance at
the CRA chess club meeting,
Wooten said not until after the
Southwestern Open Chess Tour-
nament.

try to locate Scott, who’ll be
hiding somewhere in Tarrant

Commissioner Max Schelper
said participants do not have to
have a transmitter to compete.
He said the only items necessary
include a loop antenna, a receiv-
er on any one of the three fre-
quencies and “lots of gasoline.”
Scott, better identified by his
ham friends as K5PVT, will be

Schelper said he expects about
50 hams to turn out for CRA
radio club’s first transmitter
hunt. If it’s a success, he in-
tends to plan other hunts.
On Aug. 1 there’ll be a special
sideband discussion for CRA ra-
dio hams with Tal Lawrence of
Dept. 7 co-ordinating the pro-
gram. Lawrence, also called
W5GVZ, will attempt to acquaint
the uninitiated radio hams with
single sideband transmission.
He’ll show how it differs from
standard AM transmission and
some of its merits.
Bell got first in precision stunt
and second in Nordic A/2 tow-
line glider. Mrs. Bell took first
in the rat race contest and third
in the B gas category.
Now the modelers are planning
a trip to the National Model Air-

next week at Los Alamitos Nav-
al Air Station in California.
Commissioner Clay Price an-
nounced another radio control
model plane contest this week.
It’ll be Aug. 2 in the north sec-
