SAVED BY LIFE LINE—H. Counts Jr., a Convair FW Dept. 44
employee only 10 days, learned in a convincing fashion that safety
pays. While riveting atop the pilot's enclosure on a B-36, his foot
slipped. Only thing that saved him from crashing to the solid
concrete about 20 feet below was the life belt which he had
thoughtfully attached a few moments before. Counts is the son
of H. Counts, Dept. 63.

Rubber Horseshoes
A Quick Sell-out
A first shipment of 300 of the
new type rubber horseshoes was
received at Convair SD last week
and quickly “sold out.”
J. K. Field, Employee Service,
said the manufacturer will de-
liver the shoes at intervals as
they are produced. Ultimately,
there will be enough to satisfy
all requirements. Meanwhile,
however, shoes will be sold as
they are received but with every
attempt to place them fairly
throughout the plant so that each
building will receive approxi-
mately its share.
CRA Trophy Awaits
Biggest FW Bass
Convair FW fishermen have a
chance to fish for a CRA trophy
to be awarded the sportsman
catching the biggest bass during
the period Sept. 1-30.
“The bass may be caught in
any manner, with any bait, so
long as it is legal,” says Luther
Edmiston, winner of the 1948
trophy and fishing commissioner.
To qualify, however, the bass
must be registered at the fishing
camp where it is caught or at a
local sporting goods store. Proof
of registration should be turned
in to the Employee Services sec-

Sycamore League
Winners Narrowly
Miss in City Loop
The 1949 softball season at
Convair FW ended last week with
the addition of four trophies to
the trophy case—and with pain-
ful memories for the one team
which fought its way to the
finals of the city championship
before it was washed out.
Working agonizingly close to
the city title was the Convair
squad in the Sycamore League.
Manager Ed Tucknies and his
boys easily won the league title,
but were downed by Topsy’s Cafe
twice in a row, 10 to 1 and 3 to
0, to put them out of the running
for the city championship.
The Bombers, winners of the
Texas League trophy, previously
had been downed in the city
championship play-offs.
Other trophy winners were the
Tooling squad, intra-plant cham-
pions and second shift winners,
and the Major Assembly team,
first shift winners. Tooling de-
feated Major Assembly in the
first play-off game 13 to 7, and
the final game, 7 to 1.
Eleven teams and 176 players
competed in Convair games this
season. “I want to thank every
team member for the fine spirit
of co-operation that helped us
complete a successful season,”
said Jack Brittain, softball com-
missioner.
Purebred Earthworms
Purebred earthworms and their
value in a garden was explained
Aug. 17 for members of the SD
Garden Club by R. J. Saunders
(Dept. 25), who raises them com-
mercially. Saunders handed out
samples of the worms.
TOP RACKETEERS—In upper photo, Convair FW tennis finalists
Frank Caldarola (left) and Fred Brown are shown during match in
which they defeated C. J. Hall and Walter Bradley. Brown also won
the singles crown by eliminating Phil Mahaffey in finals. Lower

and Brown.
