THEY BEAT THE CHAMPS —"Now what do you call us?
Champs or chumps?" Manager Pete Grijalva asked after his '31
Rockets softball club toppled Tooling, 1949 SD champions, in a
post-season sudden death tourney. They won in the finals 7-6.
Front row, left to right: M. B. Fuhrmann, G. J. Bearss, F. A. Riddle,

Three hundred twenty bowl-
ers making up 64 teams and
playing in five different leagues
are signed up for winter bowling
at Convair FW, according to
Commissioner H. G. Starkey.
Entries are now closed with
play scheduled to start in all
leagues the first two weeks in
September.
Starting the bowling ball roll-
ing will be Engineering League
players Sept. 6 at the Playdium.
A Convair women’s team will
begin weekly play Sept. 7 at
Bowlanes.
On Sept. 8 play will get under
way in the 800 League at the
Playdium, the 735 League at the
Alley Bowl and the second shift
league at Bowlanes. Replacing
Roy Coykendall as secretary of
the 800 League is C. B. Mitchella.
Play will start Sept. 12 for the
650 League at Bowling Center
and for the Convair team in the
Major City League at Playdium.
Heading the newly organized 650
League will be C. H. Buse, presi-
dent and G. W. Partridge, secre-
tary-treasurer.
A twelve-game playoff was
held Aug. 20-21 to determine the
best six bowlers to represent
Convair in the Major City
League. The team will consist
of Johnny Harpstrite, A. J. Flet-
cher, W. C. Henderson, Newt
Halbrook, Vic Gallagher and Paul
Johnson.
“We are looking forward to a
better season than ever before,”
says Starkey. “One of our big
aims is to hold another tele-
graphic bowling match with San
Diego bowlers during the 1949
season.”
Bombardier Winner
In Rifle Tourney
Charles E. Bombardier, Con-
vair FW (Dept. 27-1), returned
from the “Big D Small Bore
Rifle Tournament,” held in Dal-
las, Aug. 20-21, with three
trophies and 12 medals for excel-
lence in sharpshooting.
Bombardier, who won first
place in 11 out of 12 matches in
the sharpshooters class, was re-
classified as an “expert” rifle-
man after the two-day meet. He
competed against 60 riflemen to
win the J. R. Somers trophy with
a score of 399 out of a possible
400 points.
Convair SD this week entered
two softball teams in the city
post-season double elimination
tournament.
In the major league Convair’s
colors will be carried by the
same club that played in the
Triple A; while in the minor divi-
sion Convair will be represented
by the Eagles, winners of the
City Industrial League. The
event will last about a month.
Schedules were announced last
week-end.
Convair finished the formal
city softball season with one
championship, a second place and
a fourth. The Eagles lost only
a single game while winning the
Industrial League, clinching the
crown by defeating Standard Oil
7 to 4 in their final game, Aug.
17. The Eagles scored four runs
in the first inning and led all
the way, staving off a ninth in-
ning Standard Oil rally.
In the Triple A League, Con-
vair came to life after an eight-
game losing streak to win their
last four games, finishing in
fourth position.
Convairiety in the B League
had one more game to play last
Friday night and appeared cer-
tain to wind up in second spot.

“Don’t ya think it kinda does
something for me?”
BOX HOCKEY—Though the temperature outside is 100 degrees
and up, Convair FW Bomb Bay department (43) employees still
enjoy their "hockey". It is called "box hockey" and was brought
to the plant for lunch-time fun by W. O. (Bill) Malone. Shown
playing are, left to right, Myrle E. Markum and J. C. Bass Jr. Object
is to knock or push two-inch circular wooden puck through the "goal"
at either end of the box. After the face-off, puck must be knocked
or pushed through one of the two slots in center board to go from
one side of the "ice" to the other.
HOT PITCHERS—Concentration makes for championship horse-
shoe pitching in these FW pictures of Dept. 30 players. Left, L. E.
Harris gets set for decisive toss while at right P. F. Holloway draws
aim. Both are competing in plant-wide tournament.
