basketball coach and assistant
coach. He is a head coach in a 4-A
school in the Pasadena SchooL
District where he has served as
head basketball coach for 4 years.
Melvin King. Water Works
Manager for the Bandera Water
Control and Improvement District
No. 1, is shown here with a
handsome plaque awarded to the
Bandera 'Water District at a water
works short school at Texas AAM
University on March 10, 1971.
Mr. King said lie had won
awards three times before. This
award reads as follows:
“The most efficient and
attractive treatment plant, Texas
State Department of Health in
cooperation with Texas Water
Utilities Association, presented to
Bandera County WC&ID No. -1,
certificate in recognition of having
the most efficient and attractive
water plant in Texas serving a
population of 1025 for the past
year." The plaque is signed by J.
E. Peavy, M.D., Commissioner of
Health of Texas and W. J.
Bicrdcrman, president of the
Texas Water Utilities Association.
This type award is given for
excellence to towns of five
thousand population and under.
Mr. King reported that about
1,000 people were in attendance
at the short school.
PIPE CREEK FIRE DEPT.
AUX. PLANS CAKE SALE
The Wives’ Auxiliary of the
Volunteer Fire Department of
Pipe Creek will sponsor a bake
sale/on Saturday, March 20, from
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event will be
held at Ed Jennings' Country
Store at the corner of Farm Road
1283 and Highway 16. All baked
goods and donations will be
gratefully accepted.
At this time and place, there
will be registration for all children
"aged 4-10 and living in the Pipe*
Creek area, who will consider
wearing the title of Little Mister
and Little Miss Pipe Creek
Volunteer Fire Department of
1971.
Information on the pageant
will be posted at a later date.

Spring begins March 21, but
the Trading Post “jumps the gun”
a little by starting their spring sale
on March 19.

three lists some of the many items
offered at bargain prices during
the sale.
MEDINA SENIOR PLAY
The seniors of Medina High
School will present their class play
on Friday, March 19th, at 8 p.m.
The play, ‘‘Two Many Relatives",
is a hilarious farce. The action
moves along at a fast and furious
tempo. Some of the most
outrageously funny lines and
situations imaginable are found in
this play. Joirt your friends in
laughter and fun at the school
auditorium on Friday, March
19th.
Bandera County’s official
population in the*! 970 census was
4,747, up 22.0 percent from the
1960 figure of 3 892, The Bureau
of the Census, U.S: Department of
Commerce, reports.
The official population of the
state was 11,196,730, up 16.9
percent from the 1960 population
count, which was 9,597,677.
The 1970 census 'counted
4,710 white persons in Bandera
County, 99.2 percent of the total;
27 negroes, and 10 persons of
other races, In 1960, 99.5 percent
of the population was white.
The census showed 261
children under 5 years; 1,092 in
ages 5 through 17; 2,535 people
18 through 64; and 859 who were
65 and older. The population 14
years and over included 2,599
married people, 334 who were
widowed. 131 divorced, and 738
never married.
Bandera County’s 1970
population was classified as 100
percent rtpral.
There were 1,760 households,
with 4,657 persons, including 395
one-person households. In
addition 90 persons were living in
group quarters.
The 1970 census counted
3,389 housing units in Bandera
County, 1,295 of them occupied
by owners, 465 occupied by
tenants, and 1,629 vacant. These
included vacant units for seasonal
use. The proportion occupied by
owners in 1970 waft 38.2 percent,
compared with 41.1 percent in
1960.
Among year round dwelling
units there were 3,154 single
family houses, 104 housing units
in multi unit buildings, and 78
mobile homes or trailers. The
percentage of occupied units with
more than one person per room
was 10.4. compared with 14.6 in
1960. Of all the occupied housing
units, 1,588 had piped water,
toilet, and bath, while 172 lacked
some or all plumbing.
The median value of
owner-occupied houses in Bandera
County was $9,500, compared
with $7,200 in I960. The median
rent paid by tenants in 1970 was
$47 per month, compared with
$49 in 1960. Half were over and
half below the median figures.

SCHOOL BOARD POST
Adolph H. Schott of Pipe
Creek has authorized the Bandera
Bulletin to announce his
candidacy for a place on the
' Ba’ndera Independent School
District Board, subject to the
April 3 election.
Mr. Schott is an old time
rancher of Bandera County. He
served 17 years on the ASC
Committee. Being appointed by
the Governor along with the
County Agent, he wds
instrumental in establishing our
local Soil Conservation District,
He served as a Director for 1 1
years after forming the District.
He has served since the beginning
as a Director and President of the
REA.
He respectfully asks your
support and vote in the April 3
election, and if elected will do his
utmost to have a school system
we can all be proud of and still
stay within a budget that the
ranchers, businessmen and retired
people of this county can afford.
BANDERA SCHOOL BOARD
ADOPTS TEXTBOOKS
The Bandera School Board
adopted textbooks recommended'
by a committee of teachers at the
last regular meeting. Books
adopted Included art, friusit,
arithmetic, homcmaking, life
science, shop, English, literature,
math, chemistry, history and
vocational agriculture.
Mr. and Mrs. Gene Mynard of
Corpus Chrsti, Texas wish to
announce the marriage of their
daughter, Susan Elizabeth, to
Charles Allen Seale of Medina. A
double ring ceremony was
performed in San Marcos on
February 12, 1971.
The bride is currrcntly a senior
at Southwest Texas State
University and will receive her
Bachelor of Science in Education
degree this coming May.
The groorn is a senior at
Southwest Texas State University
where he is a member of Alpha
Kappa Psi, Professional fraternity
and complete his degree
requirements in August for a BBA
degree.
The couple is currently living
at Lakeview Trailer Park in San
Marcos.
Miss Janice Rae Whitaker and
Gervase T. Laskowski exchanged
vows in a beautiful and impressive
ceremony and Mass at 10 a.m.
Saturday morning, February 6, at
St. Stanislaus Catholic Church
here. Msgr. Paul J. Ehlingcr
officiated at the double ring
ceremony and Mrs. J. Manley
Reynolds played the wedding
music.
The bride’s parents are Mr. and
Mrs. E. V. Whitaker of Lakehills,
and the groom’s parents are Mr.
and Mrs. Paul Laskowski of
Bandera.
The pretty bride was given in
marriage by her father. She wore a
floor length gown of white
Alencon lace over satin. Her
shoulder length, two layered veil
was fastened to a tiara of satin
petals, each petal was accented
with pearls. Her detachable train
was of satin and lace. She carried
a bouquet of yellow sweetheart
roses and snow flake mums with
white lace streamers.
The groom wore a full dress
tuxedo of black brocade with
satin trim.
Mrs. Charles McCay, sister of
the bride, was matron of honor.
She wore a full length gown of
aqua silk organza and carried a
bouquet of white snow flake
mums with white satin streamers.
Bridesmaid was Mrs. Kenneth
D’Spain. She wore a full length
gown of rainbow colored silk
organza and her bouquet was also
Institute of America snow flake mums,
studied under the Flower girl was little Miss Elaine
Foster, cousin of the groom. She
wore a floor length gown of white
Alencon lace and carried a
bouquet of snow flake mums with
yellow satin streamers.
Ring bearer was Master Chuck
McCay, nephew pf the bride. He
wore a tuxedo also.
Best man was Edward
Laskowski, brother of the groom.
