Phil Stein . . . the Mushroom
Phillip Stein sprouted after a
soaking rain in Kcrrville on
September 9, 1954. As the
atmosphere of Bandera suited his
life style better, he moved here
shortly after the rain stopped.
Unlike his fellow mushrooms,
Phillip aspired to books and won
the I. E. Adamietz Award in the
eighth grade while attending St.
Joseph’s School. Soon afterward
he decided to try life at a public
school and try his head at the
challenging game of football. He

AN AVERAGE DAY
OF AN 8-TH GRADER
Even before t he

grader’s day starts. For some it is
the stern call ot a parent or the
cracking voice of a disc jockey
making corny jokes that wakes
them up in the morning. As you
lie in bed, trying to wake up,
everything seems a blur. Suddenly
you remember the History test
you have that day. You go over in
your mind what you studied the
night before, and think "was it
George Washington ot
Henry Kissinger who crossed the
Delaware ?”
Somehow you get through
breakfast and riding the bus to
school and the next commanding
sound you hear is the eight
thirty-five bell that starts the
day’s activities at school.
As you go to your first period
not know what this word means.
During the school year a band
may participate in three contests,
marching concert and
sight reading. The band receives a
rating for each of the three
contests. The rating scores range
from I to IV. If a band receives a
first division in all three of these
it is said to be a

be excellent in alftields to receive
this high honor.
The first contest that the
Bulldog Band will journey to will
be the .marching contest at
Pearsall on November 18. The
members have been working on
their contest show. The results of
their hard work will be presented
this Friday in a pre-game show.

4:00 o’clock bell to ring but you
remember with resignation that
you still have y more periods to
go. You decide as long as you
have to go to school you might as
well make the best of it. You
settle down and do your work
until, after what seems an
eternity, the lunch bell rings.
Although everyone complains
about the food in the cafeteria we
all rush to the door to be first in
line so lunch must be
good after all.
After a slow morning, going
through the last few periods is a
breeze.
As the day ends you look back
and sec that the day was made up
of all sorts of feelings boredom,
fatigue, enthusiasm,- curiosity,
interest, and you think to yourself
that what you can get out of a
typical day at, school depends
entirely on you. Maybe if we
changed our attitudes toward
school we wotfld realize that
education is a privilege, not a
burden.

TAKE NOTE
School Daze is an important
method of communication
between the students and the
adults of Bandera County. It is
therefore important that the
students express their
philosophies and talents in the
fields of communication so that
there will be better understanding.
All students are encouraged to
submit their bits of wisdom to the
School Daze staff anonymously if
they wish.
Love can only survive when
people accept it. There are some
who live their lives in hell and
torment because of the lack of
love. Love makes the things
around us happen. Some things
which are constituted by love
often hurt others. Wars are started
by people who love power and by
people who love their country and
who would rather “fight than
switch.” I'm. not saying to do
what you feel if it’s what you love
doing, especially if it is fighting. I
am saying, "Love Thy Neighbor
and think of him first."
