BREAKS HIP
Mrs. Faye Keese, underwent
surgery Monday in Sid Peterson
Memorial Hospital in Kerrville.
She suffered a fall at her home
Saturday night and was taken to
the hospital where it was found
that she had a broken hip We hope
she will soon be up and around

December 22. Her son in-law,
Gayle Bailey, of Alpine and her

•IN WRECK
Arlen Williams, son of Mr and
Mrs. Vet* non Williams, was
painfully injured as he was
returning home from work at
Bandera Electric Cooperative,
Inc., last Friday. His car hit an
iced-over spot in the road and
'Struck'-a tree. A television set he
was carrying in the back of the car
struck him. causing a severe.gash
on the back of his head. He also
suffered facial lacerations and
bruises. He was rushed to Sid
Peterson Memorial Hospital in
Kerrville by a Plummer am
bulance, where he is now
receiving treatment.

stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky,
will receive the Bandera Bulletin

To continue a series of articles
to introduce in picture and words
the personalities and background
of the elected officers of the 1’ipe
Creek Vol. Fire Dept., we in-
troduce Mr. Austin Burton,
elected as 2nd Assistant Fire
Chief.
Austin Burton is among the
newest of our "new-comers,”
having bought property in the Rio
Vista Ranch Acres in February
1972, He had to return to Indiana.,
and sell his home and move hi.
household furniture down here,
therefore, we consider him a
bonafide resident only since June.
Born in 1907 in Pittsburg, Pa.,
Austin worked for 43 years as a
sheet metal worker Working-most
of the time in the Chicago area,
and living in Indiana, Mr Burton
packed away his tools and retired
in 1971 •
Austin is married to the former
Betty Sander of .Sidney, Australia,
and the father of one sqn, Philip.
Philip is presently attending
Purdue University working for a'
degree in Pharmacy, and his Dad
says, “Wouldn’t it be something if
_Phil could open up the first drug
store in Pipe Creek.’” (Were
growing . . . but not that fast!)
Austin met his wife while
assigned vh Australia with the U.
S. Navy CB’s (Construction
Battalion 1 during WW II After the
war he sent for his war bride. They
were married in Chicago in 1947.
Mr Burton was asked why he
chose Pipe Creek for'relirjyrent
Tie explained that he and the wife
had traveled all over the western
stales, south into Florida, * and
through Texas in the year -'TV
seeking a , retirement home.
Somehow he was routed up
through the Hill Country of
Bandera County and a realtor took
him to the Medina (liver. Once his
wife saw the riven she screamed .'
“this is it!" Austin proclaimed
with a grin, "Betty w as raised on a
river in Sidney,” sq they settled on
river front property and became
active citizens in our community.

TAKEN TO HOSPITAL
Mrs. Shirley Balero was taken
by Plummer ambulance to Sid
Peterson Memorial Hospital in
Kerrville last Wednesday for
treatment, Tier friends wish for
her a speedy recovery.

The Pipe Creek Home
Demonstration Club held its
regular monthly business meeting
in the Community Center on
Friday, January 5, 1973, at 2 p.m.
Mrs E. C. Morganstern, the
president, presided at the
meeting The members answered
roll call to ."What I’did special for
Christmas." The minutes of the
last meeting were read hy Mrs. J.
B Edwards and the treasurer's
report was given by Mrs. Amelia
Dickens."
After the completion of all
business, the Home Demon-
stration Agent, Mrs. Pauline
Stevens, gave ati interesting talk

Clerk were approved on a motion
by Commissioner Thompson,
seconded by Commissioner
Heisler. Carried unanimously
Monthly statement of Tax
Assessor-Collector and mqhthly
report of the Sheriff, Justices of
the Peace and Public County
Library were approved on a
motion by Commissioner
Thompson, seconded by. Com-
missioner Heisler. Carried
unanimously.
The official bonds of the elected
officials for the new -term were
approved on a motion by Com-
missioner Heisler, seconded by
Commissioner - Joiner. Carried.
Motion was made by Com-
missioner Heisler, seconded by
Commissioner Keese, the county
enter into a two year contract with*
Gates and Steen as delinquent tax
collector. Carried.
Motion was made by Com-
missioner Joiner, seconded by
Commissioner Heisler, which
motion carried, it is ordered by the
Court that the county hire two
sanitation inspectors to work
approximately six months atvtoc
per mile plus a salary of $320.00
per month.
The annual contribution of
$200.00 to the Bandera County
Historical Survey Committee was
approved on a motion by Com-
tflissioner Thompson, seconded by
Commissioner Heisler
Mrs A. B Lewis was appointed
to fill the vacancy of the office of
. Bandera County Chairman of the
Survey Committee, the office
being made vacant by the death of
her husband.
The County Judge was*
authorized to sojicit bids for
County .Depository. f
The monthly claims registered
were ordered paid on a motion
. made by Commissioner Heisler,
seconded by Commissioner Keese.
The Court reconvened on
January 15 with ^jl members of
the court present
The Court voted to amend the
budget and allocate money out of
90 per cent county ad valorem
collections to Court House lm
provement Sinking vund Per-
manent Improvement Fund be
deposited to the General Fund
until July 1, 1973.
Commissioner Howell Keese
moved to raise the salary of the
Chief Deputy Clerk to $375.00 per
month; Deputy Clerks to $325 00
per month in the Tax Assessor and
^Clerks office, Deputy Clerk in
Sheriff's office to $325.00 per
month and proposed to raise the
County Treasurer’s salary to
$500.00 per month, notice of
County Treasurer’s raise , to be
published in lofcal newspaper for
two weeks.
It was ordered by the Court that
Revenue Sharing Fund be used to
pay salaries of persons working on
assessments for the Tax.CoIlector
"Motion was made by Com-
missioner Heisler, seconded by
Commissioner Keese. Motion
carried.
Court ordered that the Sheriff be
allowed to receive bids on fixing
the fence around the jail yard, as
well as windows inside the jail.

The Court set the following
holidays for 1973: January 1,
February 19, March 2, May 28,
July 4, September 3, Ootober 22,
November 22-23 and December 24-
25. Motion made by Commissioner

The Court ordered that each
precinct be allocated.-$5500.00 out
of Revenue Sharing Fund over a
four year period to be used for
permanent improvements in each
precinct.

MEETS
The Ladies Auxiliary to Medina*
Lake Volunteer Fire Department
held their regular meeting on
January 8. The meeting was called
to order , by the president, Mrs.
Laura Bennett. Prayer was of-
fered by the chaplain, Mrs. Emily
Dresser. Roll call of officers
showedl all officers present except
the publicity chairman, Mrs Ruth
Cowley, and the secretary was
asked, to fill in for her.
Visitors present who became
members were Mrs. Geneva
Mooney, Mrs. Lucille Moore, Mrs.
Ann Jack, Mrs. Polly Larsen and
Mrs. Tussy Newman, making a
total of 24 present
The minutes were read and ap
proved and the treasurer’s report
was given by Mrs. Pqggy Galland
IVIembership committee reported
fiVfe new members. Mrs. 'Era
Wilkinson reported for the
telephone committee that many
cAlls had been made to the sick;
that Mrs Martha Mazurek has
been in the hospital but is now
home. Cards were to be sent to
Hattie Harrison, Dixie Hammonds
and Mrs. Eller. Mrs. Eller has
been ill but is better now Mrs.
Wilkinson reported that the scrap
book has been brought up to date
and is available to any one who
wishes to-see it. Mrs. Wilkinson
visited Mr and Mrs Eller, Mrs.
Dixie Hammonds and Mr Pawly,
before he passed away. Food was
taken tp the bereaved Acfiilles
family?* at’ the loss of their
daughter-in-law It was reported
that seventeen took food Mrs.
Mittie Achilles thanked everyone
for the delipous food, cards and
visits. If was reported that Mrs.
Nettie Lewis, Mrs. Bradley’s
mother, is in the Normandy
Terrace Nursing Home, 815 Rice
Road, S?an Antonio. The com-
mittee for new addresses and
phone numbers, Mrs. Montie
Markolf and Mrs. Era Wilkinson,
had prepared the .new list and it
had required a lot of time and hard
work It was well completed. Our
thanks to these gals.
In the unfinished business it was
reported that a cabinet has been
made to hold the stretcher and
first aid supplies and blankets. All
equipment is taken care of
The executive committee will
meet at a later date to go over the
by-laws
The president brought up the
,^fgct that anyone wishing To borrow
the chairs must have permission
from the Ladies Auxiliary and the
chairs mnt be returned in their
proper places. Also a persoh does
not have<6fr belong to the Auxiliary
or Fire Department to borrow the
chairs.
Secret Pals were explained to
the new members, It was pointed
out that some of rtie rnembers are
drawing names.but not glving-any
gifts or cards on the special oc
casions Motion was made by
Mrs. Dell Wilcox that we draw
names for Secret Pals again
Motion was seconded by Mrs
EmiLy Dresser and carried
Names will be drawn again in
February so that those,who were
not present may participate at
that time.

how if works space-wise. Motion
was made by Betty Boehme that
we buy an eight foot step ladder.
Motion carried. Motion was made
by Mrs. Barbara Faurie that we
buy an eight to ten foot green
Scotch Pine Christmas tree.
Motion carried unanimously.
The president brought up the
issue that hostesses are ^to clean
the meeting area. It was decided
to have three hostesses yho are
neighbors or close friends, as it
would be easier to get together as
hostesses.
Meeting was closed with prayer
by the chaplain.

We are happy to report Mrs.
Martha Mazurek is at home again
from the hospital.
C. E. McMahan is doing fine and
Donald,Totten is at home from the
Veterans Administration Hospital
where he underwent surgery. We
are sorry to report Mrs. Helen
Totten is in Baptist Memorial
Hospital in San Antonio where she
is undergoing tests. Mrs. Virginia
Pawly is also in the Methodist
Hospital in San Antonio for tests.
BETTERMENT ASSOCIATION
TO MEET
The Medina Lake Betterment
Association will meet Friday,
January 19, at the Avalon Sales
Office.
AMERICAN LEGION
TO MEET
Tfie- "James F. Pearson
American Legion Post 410 will
hold the regular meeting on
Thursday, January 25, at 8 p.m in
the Legion Hall on 26th Street
