Girls go back for seconds while
Marcos battles the big schools
By Art Dugach
Spectators were almost
blinded by the Orange, as the
Llano Lady cross country
team blended toward the fin-
ish line in the Georgetown
Invitational, October 11. The
first Jacket was only 35 sec-
onds ahead of the fifth Llano
girl to stop her watch, and
this close-knit performance
earned the girls, ranked
fourth in the state for Class
3A by the Coaches Associa-
tion, second place to second-
ranked Cameron Yoe.
On the boys' side, Marcos
Vallejo, getting to know
Class-5A schools as well as
the superintendent in Dallas,
was an impressive 13th
among dose to 300 runners.
Only a handful were stu-
dents who attend 3A cam-
puses, and none beat the Ll-
ano freshman. In six meets
this year, Marcos is perfect
against 3A opponents.
"As for the girls, we accom-
plished what we wanted to,”
head coach Dan Hughes said.
"We ran well as a pack," and
Hughes always maintains
that's what creates team suc-
cess. "Breaking 13 minutes
was also good to see," he
added.
Cara Mack, the former
Kansas courier, was home in
12 minutes, 51 seconds. She
was eighth overall out of
more than 70 contestants,
and she was the first among
the Lady Jackets for the first
time in 2008.
"I wasn't expecting that,"
she stated, "because all I was
trying to do was keep up
with them-then at the erid I
knew I could give more, that
I could give all I had."
"It was crazy but great,"
Kaily Timmons exdaimed. "I
was in front of my team-
mates, then Samantha Lopez
was, then me again, finally
Cara. We were trying to do
well and stay together—that's
awesome." Timmons, who
has had a superb senior sea-
son, was only a second be-
hind Mack on the tree-sur-
rounded, two-mile course in
scenic San Gabriel Park.
"When you never know
who's going to be first, that
means all are running well,"
Hughes mentioned.
"As a freshman, it's a little
' tough keeping up with the
older girls because of their
experience,” Lopez disclosed,
"but they push me and help
me." Samantha was 12th on
the scoreboard, and that was
a huge help to the squad.
Lauren Parker came in
17th, while fellow senior
Chelsea Montgomery was a
respectable 21st, as her left
ankle continues to heal. "At
first we were all spread out,"
Marcos Vallejo finished 13th among 300 runners in the
Georgetown meet Saturday.

Montgomery advised, "but
then we all seemed to get to-
gether. That's amazing and
just what we need. The drive
of this bunch is incredible,
and I'm so proud of Cara-
she works so hard; she's phe-
nomenal.” (Somebody, who
was in the least bit modest,
would share his byline with
Chelsea.)
For those of you still wait-
ing to hear about Marcos
Vallejo, please hold your own
tickets and try not to bother
anyone during the seminar.
'T was really pleased with
my time," Marcos said. And
he should have been. He
toured the three-mile layout
in 15 minutes, 45 seconds;
that's four seconds slower
than Cole Hoffman's time a
year ago. Hoffman, who
graduated in May, is the
greatest middle-distance
runner in Llano school his-
tory.
Vallejo vanquished veteran
foes from such huge
instititutions of secondary
education as Georgetown,
Leander, Temple, Copperas
Cove and Round Rock. "Run-
ning against 5A guys should
be a big help against 3As in
district, region and state,"
Marcos explained. "The 5As
are, like, weird fast." He of-
fered this declaration: "I want
to get better and better and
prove myself; I don't like to
lose."
"Everyone is about on
schedule," Hughes said in his
summation, "and we're just
now getting into our speed
work for the big contests
ahead.” The district meet is in
Fredericksburg, October 29;
the region gathers in Lub-
bock, November 8, and the
state championships are at
Old Settlers Park in Round
Rock, November 15.
The coach on Marcos: "He
was in with some really good
runners at Georgetown; the
competition was loaded with
guys you’ll see in the top ten
in 4A and 5A at the state
meet."
