Emancipation Celebration.
Fairfield, Tex., May 11, ’95.
Parauant to the call of Chairman
W. L. Moody, a email but intelli-
gent number of the patriotic cob
ored citizens of Freestone eouDty
Wet in tbe courthouse for the pur-
pose of uiakiujt' preparations for
the Emancipation celebration.
The house was called to order
by Chairman Moody, who Btated
briefly the object for which we
had' met. After the object bud
been stated the house proceeded
to permanent organization for
1995-6. The following permanent
officers were elected: • N. Plain,
president; J. Ii. Blaine, secretary.
After the election of officers, the
chair was empowered to appoint a
'committee on location. The com-
mittee selected the old Methodist
church ground, about.-one-half of a
mile southeast from Fairfield,' and
is the same old celebrating ground
where tbe .colored people of Free-
stone have bad some interesting
celebrations. It is believed that
this location is an appropriate one
and will help to advance the pur-
poses of tile celebration which,
have been on the decline since the
days of 1888.
After some interesting remarks
by Messrs. Sandy Bragg, Booker
Kingnnd others the chair was em-
powered to appoint the following
committees: >
Committee on Arrangements—
Geo. Hambrick, S. B. Bragg, Mos-
es Jonas, E. Livingston, fc>. T.
Thomas, Stepney Moses, L. B.
King, Oce Jones, Newton Durham,

James Jones, H. 11. Jones.
Committee on Program—H. R.

Jones, J. W. Dawson, PortprRob-
inson, Andrew William% Aphony
Richie.
Committee on Finance—Wade
Shumate, M°ses Jones, Henry Ti-
tus, Jeff Livingston, N. Miller.
The Chairman requested each
committeeman to make himself in-
terested in bringing about unity
for the occasion.
On motion the meeting then ad.
journed till Saturday, $Iay 25th,
when all oonjmitteeB are requested
to be present and report what
they have done.

Mexico and Her Free Silver.
What is

S. M. Inman, of Georgia, the
most prominent of Southern finan-
ciers, went to Mexico a single
standard"advocate aud rettfvued a(
convert to the free silver .coinage.
This is the reason he gives for his
change of opinion;
“I find that Mexico has pros-
pered duriug'the lust two ' years,
when business conditions in our
country have been clogged, where
they have not been actually going
backward. Cotton in Mexico is
selliqg at 16J cents a.pound in sil-
ver which is equal to 8J cents in
our money. I paid $7.50 in silver
for a suite of rooms which, in this
country, would have cost $10 in I
gqld. A suit of clothes, a pair of

dfoves, a hat, or any item of ne-
cessity 6ells in Mexico approxi-
mately the same in silver that we
are required to pay here in gold;
in other words at about half the
price. This establishes very clearly
to my mind the absurdity of the
argument about silver beiDg de-
preciating currency. A silver dol-
lar in Mexjco will do what is done
by a gold dollar in this country,
aud it has been the appreciation
of gold and not the depreciation
of silver which ha* brought about
the disparity.
“I found the factories running

Orizaba, capitalized at $3,500,000,
was paying from 20 to 25 per cent,
dividends. The jieople are con-
tented and prosperous, an l havp
not sufferod from the general de-
pression during the last faw years
The truth of the matter is that the'
silver currency of Mexico has act-
ed as a splendid protection meas-
ure against outside depression, and
as it has resulted iu Mexico, so it
would be in this country, if we
could imitate the exam pie of Mex-
ico iu this respect and throw our-
selves upon our own resources.”
•• Castoria Is the best remedy for children of
which I am acquainted. I hope tho day is not
far distant when mothers will consider tho real
interest of their children, aud use Castoria in-
stead of the rariousquack nostrums which are
destroying thVtr loved ones, by forcing opium,
morphine, soothing syrup and other hurtful
agents down their throats, thereby sending
them to premature graves.”

A Strange Church Visitor.
ChilliOothe, Hardeman Go., Tex-
as, April 29.—A strange incident
occurred at a obnroh in tbia place
yesterday daring services. While
the choir was singing an opening
song, a white pigeon alighted in
un open window near the music
axid remained there until the min-
ieter commenced hia sermon when
tbe bird changed its position to
tbe pulpit, walking about over the
open Bible and the preacher's
notes duping the entire sermon,
despite the clergyman's eloquence
and gestures within a few inches
of the unexpected visitor who re-
mained until after the congrega-
tion wee dismissed.
The preacher alluded to the ap--
pearance of the pigeon by saying:
‘‘That in tbe days of Christ the
holy spirit came in the form of a
dove,” and he hoped that the same
spirit was with us to-day.
This is no fake, but an actual
occurrence, which can be verified
