homestead and have torn down

soon be making their home.

Mrs. V-mon Matusek and family
all from Yoakum; Mr. and Mrs.
Harvey Matusek from Houston.
In the afternoon Mrs. Bo Brice
and Miss Mary Opela from Hous-
ton were there.

from ialletteville spent a while

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Rae from
Sarasota, Florida visited their
son and family at A and M Uni-
versity during the Christmas ho-
lidays and came by here last
Tuesday to visit with Mr. and
Mrs A. W. Matusek. They be-
came friends of the Matuseks
several years ago while they
all lived in Cuba.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Machicek
from Houston visited here last Sa-
turday with relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. John Machicek,
Mr and Mrs. Joe Siegel and
children from here, Mr. and Mrs.
J. E. Machicek and family from
Yoakum were in El Campo New
Year's day with Mr. and Mrs.
Bill Pralkn and family.
Mrs. Geneva Knezek was in
Corpus Christina few days last
week with Mrs. Cleave Probst.

Miss Schlarb was apparently
chosen as one of the best stu-
dents from among 140 applicants.
The text of her prepared speech
explained the procedure;
"In my area. 140 students ap-
plied and lour were selected, then
three of them finally became ex-
change student. Coming aero*
the Atlantic by boat, we were a
group of 700 exchange students
going to the USA to spend a Sen-
ior year in high schools.
"There were 200 students from
Germany The others were from
countries in other parts of Eu-
rope ... Our ship, the Seven
Seas, crossed the ocean In nine
days. We scattered in New York
and T came to Texas by bus.’.'
M>ss Schlarb reported that in
high school in Germany she had
15 subjects, in a school day last-
ing only from 8:00 a. m. to 1:00
n. m., as compared with six sub-
jects at Victoria and a school
day there scheduled from 8:30
a. m. to 3:30 p. m.

J. Tighe. 2302 Loma Vista. Vic-
toria, Texas. Gisela arrived there
last summer, to get acquainted
with the* high school students in
the Schlarb family, and is now
half way Ihru her Senior year at
Victoria High. Mrs. Tighe and
Mi*. Allan Weigand of Victoria
accompanied the exchange stu-
dent to Yoakum. Speaking good
English with a German accent.
Miss Schlarb showed almost com-
plete mastery of Texas English,
Miss Gisela Schlarb, from Ger-
many, currently a Senior at Vic-
toria High School, was the speak-
er for the Yoakum Lions Club
program session Tuesday noon,
after a business session in which
President W. C. Alexander re-
ported great success for the Lions
Christmas basket project and oth-
