EVER SINCE they began to build tall steel light poles, to light such areas as super*
market parking lots, people have wondered how the worn out bulbs are replaced.
Ordinarily, a man must be lifted to the top of the pole—via an aerial ladder of some
sort—and this means at least two men and their heavy equipment are needed.- Not
so, today, In The Crossroads, one of Omaha’s biggest shopping centers. These steel
poles are built with a hinge a little more than halfway up. When the light bulb goes
out, one man lowers the top of the pole to working level, installs the bulb and the
pole is taken back up to its full 30 feet. The maintenance man has stopped qualifying
