the authorities of the New York
Postgraduate hospital believe
that cures have been effected in
forty-five cases of consumptior
treated at the institution while
the patients continued at their
daily work. Possibly the figures
may need amendment later, but
i they will occasion no surprise.
1 For several years tuberculosis
in its early stages have been suc-
cessfully treated by building up
the patient physically until his
system is able to combat the dis-
ease. Treatment in a sanitarium
has been preferred because the
patient there is under the most
favorable surroundings and can
be watched over carefully by
physicians. But instances have
been known in which persons
unable to leave home have been
restored to health by strict ob-
servance of rules for diet and ex-
ercise.
Under the system adopted by
the Postgraduate hospital per-
sons affected by the disease who
are obliged to continue at work
have been reported twice a day
at the institution and have follow-
ed a prescribed diet. The sani-
tarium undoubtedly offers better
advantages for treatment in most
cases. But for those in which
circumstances compel the patient
to remain at work, the results
attained in New York are encour

'•Tli© Irresponsible Press.’’
At the annual banquet of the
Missouri Bar association in Kan-
sas City several speaker* refer-
red to “the irresponsible press.”
Like a s /veet morsel the phrase
was rolled upon the tongues of
distinguishedorators Thepbrase
has been heard before. It be-
longs to the cant of the demoga-
guti. It is part of the stock-in-
trade of the hypocrite and the
sneak. The criminal, exposed
by the newspaper, is quick to
hurl the phrase as defiance.
Boodler and traitor to public
trust, who have felt the sting of
exposure, employ the phrase
to express their contempt for the
journals which have held them
up to public condemnation. It is
not a phrase that should find ex-
pression upon lawyer’s lips or in
the judge’s speech.
There is no irresponsible press.
The press is responsible because,
in its last analysis, that which it
prints is the utterance of an in-
dividual, answerable to his own
conscience and to the laws of
God and man. It is responsible
to the people who make it pos-
sible. Consideration of finances
makes it responsible, for no
newspaper can Ion? succeed
without public confidence and
support, and to have this sup-
port and confidence the news-
paper must be worthy of it
“Irresponsible” as applied to the
press is an adjective of contempt
and condemnation. It is not
deserved-
The press might, if it chose,
say some harsh words regarding
the responsibility of the lawyer
on and off the bench. That so
seldom there is published such
criticism is a commentary upon
the good nature of the newspap-
er folks.—Columbia Herald.

Kidney Trouble Makes Ton Miserable.
Almost everybody who reads the news-
papers is sore to know of the wonderful
cures made by Dr.
Kilmer’s Swamp-
Root, the great kid-
ney, liver and blad-
der remedy.
It is the great med-
ical triumph of the
nineteenth century ;
discovered after years
of scientific research
by Dr. Kilmer, the
eminent kidney and
bladder specialist, and is wonderfully
successful in pron>|JUy curing lame back,
nric acid, catarrh of the bladder and
Bright’s Disease, Which is the worst
form of kidney trcuble.
Dr. Kilmer’s SVI Utep-Root is not rec-
ommended for evt'l >thing but if you have
kidney, liver or Ml aider trouble it will be
found just the remedy you need. It has
been tested in so II uny ways, in hospital
work and in prhMte practice, and has
proved so successful in every case that a
special arrangement has been made by
which all readers c l this pajier, who have
not already tried it, may have a sample
bottle sent free by mail, also a book tell-
ing more about SWHnip-Root, ana how to
find out if you have kidney or bladder trou-

A Bad Scare.
Some day you will get a bad scare,
when you feel a pain in your bowels,

such as headache, biliousness, costive-
uess, etc. Guaranteed at H. W.
Stark Drug Co., only 25c. Try them.
Dying of Famine
is, in its torments, like dying of con-
sumption. The progress of consump-
tion, from the beginning to the very
en d, is a long torture, both to victim
and friends. “When I had consump-
tion in its first stage,” writes Wm.
Meyers, of Cearfoss, Md., “after try-
ing different medicines and a good
doctor, in vain, I at last took Dr.
King’s New Discovery, which quickly
and perfectly cured me.” Prompt
relief and sure cure for coughs, colds,
sore throat, bronchitis, etc. Positively
prevents pneumonia. Guaranteed at
H. W. Stark Drug Co., price 50c and
$1.00 a bottle. Trial bottle free.
THEY Ml HYING
THE TRIBAL TAX
Muskogee, I. T., June 13.—The
merchants of Muskogee were ad-
vised by wire yesterday after-
noon that their committee in
Washington had *een the Presi-
dent and failed in their mission
to get a suspension of the tribal
tax. The merchants realise their
last hope is gone and they are
paying up, but every one of them
is entering protest, and should
the Supreme Court decide favor-
ably to them there will be some
healthy claims against the de-
partment of the interior and the
Creek tribal government. The
merchants are not falling over
themselves to pay. They are de-
laying every momant possible.
There have been no more stores
closed and there will likely be
none. The chances are that there
will be many who will not pay
and many others who will not
pay anything like the amount
they are expected to pay. There
has been no effort made to col-
lect the tax in the other towns o:’
the nation, but there will be as
soon as Muskogee gets through
