urge If you ask him but many
practically do deny it by doling

sona large property holders who
reap the largest advantage from the
labors of the press do less than
others for its support With
selfsustaining free and unbought
press the liberties of tho people aro
safe and the rate of progress of a
country is always unerringly
marked by the degree of prosperity
exhibited by its newspapers

I Tothosool our roader who feel I
farmers expend the energy and
strength of their manhood in faith-
fully tilling the soil if through cor-
rupt legislation or unfriendly dis-
crimination in government tho
fruits of their labors bo ruthlessly
absorbed in tariffs and taxes or bo
otherwise unduly exacted of them
under tho forms of law While
therefore they may and doubtless
do need tho assistance of tho press
in elevating the standard of agricul-
ture and disseminating useful in-
formation for tho farm and homK
not less certainly but rather more
important is it that th y should bo
faithfully and ably represented
through that medium in watoliinb
OveMhelr interests of a public or
political character and in securing
to them cconomio government with
good and wholesome laws
So also in regard to the social
and educational and many other
interests not exclusively agricultu-
ral The farmers have need of h
paper devoted to tho promotion of
these no less than to that of tho
science of agriculture itself
Such indeed is the multiplicity
and magnitude of interests in
which tho farmers of our country
aro peculiarly concerned and such
tho number and strength of inter-
ests and influences antagonistic to
their own that a paper devoted to
agricultural topics alone cannot bo
considered truly representative of
the agricultural classes in any but n
partial and very remoto degree
With this view of tho situation and
its requirements wo have not
thought it incumbent upon us to
confine the Exauixeii ajd Pathon
to matters of a purely agricultural
nature as some have thought
should have been done on account
of its relations as tho Official Jour
nal of tho Texas Stato Grange On
tho contrary upon a careful survey
of the field before us we havo found
and do yet find many other matters
claiming attention of tho Exam
iner andPathon no less but rather
more imperatively than those per-
taining strictly to the household
and farm We have felt indeed
that while to the best of our abil
ity promoting the one we should
fall far short of tho duties and ob
ligations upon ns in neglecting the
other or in giving them less attcn
lion than their recognited import-
ance desen es
While some may dissent the vast
majority of our readers we feel as-
sured will agree with us fully in
these opiniQUsboth as regards the
usefulness and desirability of our
paper and the duties and obliga-
tions involved
It is with the utmost confidence
therefore that in this the tirao of
our greatest need and most urgent
necessities wo make this appeal for
that friendly aid and activo cooper-
ation among our friends through-
out the State upon which we havo
relied and upon which alone it is
K > ssibIe to make the Examimer and

The worth and importance of n
well conducted newspaper in any
given community can hardly be
overestimated but on the oontrary
is nearly always underrated Manu-
factories and schools rail and river
facilities are the great means used to
posh forward a local point but the
close observer finds that the news-
paper generally precedes all these
and is the first to strike for them
and the flret means used to call
pnblio attention to these advan-
tages which buitd tip a community
It is difficult to imagine what the
condition of a town would be with-
out newspapers Imagine Boston
Lowell Pittsburg Chicago Au-

newspaper A simple glance is
sufficient to reveal their importance
to a local point What has tho
