The North Texas Courant publish-

Messrs Hicks Scaycr is jroiuj to
issue a special edition of 20000 copies
during the latter part of February
The object of tho edition is to attract
immigration to Texas We trust the
ellorl will prove a success We hae
room for several millions more people
in Texas and as the state does not do
anything to encourage immigration
the work must devolve upon the
press which is always doing about
ten thousand per cent more for the
date than the slate has ever done tor

To our mind there is no necessity
i nr special ellbrts to bring about re-
duction The work of diminution is
going on = tejulily and we think nat
urally dcinoustratiii that the people
the true source ol power have con-
cluded that overwhelming majoriticn
are not conducive to the wel-
fare of the state of any party or of
society The majority is diminishing
with every election until we can an-
ticipate a period very near at hand
too when political forces in this stale
will be adjusted on Boiuething like a
healthy bais We will prove this to
the Age by ollieial ligures too In

always the criterion was as follows

votes Are thcae figures devoid of
logic and will the Age undertake to
ay they have no significance They
are a rebuke of many of the measure
instituted anil persisted in by the
democratic party of Texas Without
its overwhelming majority the party
would have lacked the confidence to
pursue tho course it has chosen
with reference to many questions of
public policy It was intrenched to
its thinking behind an impregnable
majority ol a hundred thousand and
it waxed bold and reckless The
result was inevitable in a state
whore the sullVagaiis arc intel
ligent The people commenced to cut
down this threatening majority
They diminished it 16991 votes in
lh78 when Gov Koberts made his first
race It was still too large for the
people for in lbSo when Gov Kob
erts offered for his second term they
reduced the majority ofl87S by 15
oil votes a total reduction of 2uj >
within four years The Examinek
and thousands of democratic voters
cannot ijnore thesu lesson = And
yet when as democrats we propose
to accept the logic of events and draw
wisdom therefrom journals of the
Ages way of thinking are ready to
characterize such acceptance and de
ductions as a lack of fealty to the
democratic party The Kxaminkk
was battling for democratic supremacy
before the Age was iu existence But
we learn as we live and when we
find that this or that thing is impair-
ing the usefulness of the democratic
party we propose to try and help rem-
edy it We liud that a hundred
thousand majority U distrusted and
feared by the people by democrats
themselves no les than the opposi-
tion We believe that a smaller
preponderance would make the
party more careful more sagacious
mire conscientious in it1 control of
public allairs Given these ipulitie it
will be inherently strong resting its
claims to public confidence on its own
merits and the intelligence of the
people The majority is being pruned
down fast enough and as a demo-
cratic journal the Lxaminkk views
the process with satisfaction The
tree will be healthier bear better
fruit and live the longer
SLOW VINDICATION
Nineteen years ago Fitz lobn Por-
ter majorgeneralin the service of the
U S was tried by courtmartial and
dismissed the service for alleged in
competency cowardice and disobe-
dience of orders Ordinarily death
would have been preferable to such a
fientencs Most men would have sunk
under it Porter held his head high
and saidhc had been wronged that
if he lived time would vindicate him
Year after year and to president al-
ter president did he appeal for a
court of inquiry into the finding of the
courtmartial that had placed him so
low Andylohiison would not do any-
thing for himuor would Grant Final
Hayes ordered the court pf inquiry
It sat in New York for months and
gave a verdict last year The decis
iju was that Porter had been cruelly
maligned and wronged aud his dis-
missal was characterized as unwar-
ranted and unjust Now Gen
Grant Jen Terry and other officers
who lor years believed and declared
Porter guilty unite in an appeal to
the president that the victim of
nearly twenty years misrepresenta
tion shdl be fully vindicated by res-
toration to the ratik from which he
was deposed 11 this i6 done hib back
pay now amounting to more than

it is complete and well worth living
