The Girls, digital prit, 2003
Teresa Cisneros is a digital photographer who utilizes the medium to capture two oddly shaped
dolls in acts of wonderment or self-fulfillment. The Girls, as she refers to them, seem to struggle
in feeling natural in their utterly unnatural acts or environments. Teresa obtained a degree
in philosophy from UT - Austin and did her masters studies at the School of the Art Institute of
Chicago. Teresa has exhibited work in San Antonio and Chicago and worked for major cultural
institutions in both cities. She was born in San Antonio and is now living in the United Kingdom.
"My work deals with notions of childhood experiences by using two strange looking toy dolls as
the subjects of the photos. The photographs are captured at a close proximity to veil the size of
the dolls, or at times from afar to point out their demure size; just like in a child's world
everything seems larger than it really is or smaller when seen from an adult point of view. The
dolls seem to be expressive and menacing in a childish manner as a result of their lenticular
holographic faces reminiscent of toys from cracker-jack boxes. This allows me to capture
emotions a child may feel in moments of happiness, anger or frustration. My work questions the
perception of childhood as purely innocent as well the disturbing appearance of The Girls which
were intended for children's amusement. Beyond the conceptual nature of the work I appreciate
the comical sensibility the photographs convey because of The Girls and their odd existence in a
human world."
