"The ideas I've been exploring have found expression in many forms. They communicate through
sound, movement, and time. The work deals with perception and faintness, rhythm and anti-
rhythm. Drawing from found sounds and music, I create structures with which murmur both
personal heritage and mathematical randomness. I intend to remanufacture detested sounds and
form them into venerated orchestrations"
John Lerma is an Austin based artist working in sound, electronics, and multimedia. His tools
include a variety of technologies ranging from traditional art to work with sound installation and
computer and electronic technologies. His creations most often exist as performances and
time-based presentations and installations. He has explored the live performative qualities of
sound installations with other performers in theaters, underground venues and academic gallery
settings.
In addition, John Lerma was a driving force in Chicago's Conjugate Projekt, where he served as art
director and board member for the artist collective which explored video, installation, sound and
music for various shows and performances. He has worked as a graphic designer for such maga-
zines as Ten by Ten, Version 1.0, and Playboy magazine and currently works for the University of Texas
and Release Design. John Lerma received his BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
