Homemade bombs
tossed in Atlanta
ATLANTA (API Four home-
made bombs have been thrown
against the homes of two super-
visors of the Atlantic Steel Co. |
where a strike has been in pro- j
gress for three months.
The bombs were made of large [
electric light bulbs filled with gas-j
oline and aluminum paint. One
bomb exploded. The other three
misfired, scattering paint over thel
structures. No injuries were re- ]
ported. i
It was the second major out-!
break of v iolence since the strike j
began Oct. 31. In November a
wine Ixvttle filled with flaming]
gasoline w as tossed into the cab I
of a truck near the plant. The]
driver suffered serious burns but j
recovered.
Police said Thursday night the j
homemade bombs w ere tossed j
against the homes of Forrest L.
Cheek and Lem Harris, foremen!
at the plant. Both men have eon-1
tinued to work at the plant, which)
has been operating on a limited1
basis with supervisory personnel. ,
Howard B. Johnson, president of!
the steel company, termed the
bombings "a vicious thing" and >
said other foremen have been
threatened and had paint thrown
on their cars in the past.
Clyde E. Dye. president of Lo-
cal 2401 of the I'nited Steel Work-
ers Union, said the union does not
condqpb violence and has no idea :
who wrrs- responsible for the bomb-1
ing'
Both company and union offi-i
cials reported no immediate pros-i
pccts of a settlement.
Company spokesmen said 1.400
of the firm's 1.600 employes have'
been cut out in a dispute over
seniority provisions in the con-
tract.
