Initially. m> plan Mas to
emphasize that thi' article about
20-yearold /.aehar> (Zach*
Seward Mas out of the ordi
nat y^Tljen I changed my mind.
His story is no nK»re normal or
abnormal than all the others It's
tust dtlterem - as is everyone v
/.ash was Imhii in leu as I Hit
moved to Muskogee, Oklaho-
ma, in the sixth grade where
he ultimately graduated from
high school and worked at Hast-
ings Book and Music Store.
His- parents are Tom and Kala
Seward and siblings are Phillip,
17, Grace, 14, and Madison, 13.
Sounds like your average kid,
right.'
Well, maybe not. Things start-
ed going downhill ffrr Zach after
the move when he got into a
lot of tights at school. Why?
Because other kids picked on
him. "First 1 was the new kid;
then I became the weird kid;
and then 1 became the kid they
picked on for no reason. Grades
went downhill too,” he shared. In
addition to his parents, there was
one terrific guy named Michael
who took up for him, and he is
still Zach’s best fnend.
Probably like most parents,
they thought he was just going
through a phase and took him to
a doctor who diagnosed him with
ADD and prescribed Ritalin.
Didn’t help. So at 15 Zach went
to a mental rehabilitation center
where he was diagnosed as bipo-
lar with ADHD. The medications
they recommended helped, but
only for a while.
Still known as the weird kid
who reads comic books, Zach
realized that if his so-called
peers weren’t in trouble or trying
to get in trouble, they weren't
having fun. "It was sad but true,"
he said with a shake of the head.
Explaining why he failed the
ninth grade twice, Zach said that
he knew the answers to ques-
tions; he just didn’t understand
the need to do the work. Yet he
was smart enough to test out
of ninth and tenth grades, was
bumped to eleventh and gradu-
ated.
Then came a move to Emory
and a big change, which was a
correct diagnosis at a psychiatric
evaluation clinic of Zach being
bipolar and having mild Asperg-
er's Syndrome, a form of autism.
"Doctors told me to my face that
I was odd," he explained and
r
added that a bipolar person usu-
ally shows extreme emotions and
with Asperger’s Syndrome, he or
she usually shows none. It’s rare
to have both. “I think it’s a good
thing that they said 1 was odd; I
took it as being unique.”
Along the way, however, Zach
said he learned to seek the safety
of playing video games. No one
picking on him and no emo-
tional roller coaster there. Any-
thing science fiction or futuris-
tic also fascinated Zach, and he
realizes that was because they
offered great escapes from real-
ity. Obsessions and compulsions
were other symptoms and once
again, they made him feel safe.
Then there was the issue of
social inadequacy. He explained,
"I’ve been told a lot that I don't
look people in the eye. People
need to understand that when 1
duck my head and give one-word
answers, I feel inadequate and
am respecting them. They don’t
need to take it personally; it’s
more about me than them.”
The move to Emory brought
about another change. With
Zach’s parents struggling with
his “uniqueness" and three
other children, he moved in
with grandparents Paps and GG,
Jerry and Holly Morey, a good
move because now his life is
more structured and relaxed.
“I’m fortunate to have them,"

Zach fondly explained that GG
stands for Granny Grunt, and she
recently bought him the helpful
book. Look Me in The Eye My
Life With Asperger's.
What’s going on now? Well,
Zach helped with the Rains
County Public Library book
sale, helped move the library
sign, assisted with painting the
Meadows Room, and volun-
teered at Founder’s Day with the
pony rides And he was recently
appointed to be on the board
of directors for the library, a
great honor. The spunky guy
also worked for a while at Pulse
Labs.
Starting this summer. Zach
will take courses at Paris Junior
College in Sulphur Springs. He
is an avid reader and loves com-
puters, hoping to someday work
for a company such as Microsoft
or Apple. Is he shooting high .'
You bet, but with a loving fanuly
and a new set of friends (many
of them older adults), there’s no
reason to not go for the gusto.
Why did Zach grant this inter-
view? Because he hopes that
by explaining his challenges, he
might help just one person in
this world. His advice for bipo-
lar and/or kids struggling with
Asperger's is to force themselves
to do unpleasant things. Putting
things off won’t work. As for
