Jottings
by Johnnie
One morning in March of 1969 as my nine-year-old son was get-
ting ready for school, he asked for his book satchel, (remember
those?) He hadn’t used it in a long time, so I had stowed it away in
top of his closet. This particular morning, he had quite a few books
to carry and before he went to wait for the school bus, we packed it
full. 1
When he left, I poured another cup of coffee and sat down to
watch the morning news.
My four-year-old son and one-year-old daughter were still
asleep. I had a boatload of laundry, dirty dishes, floors that needed,
to be scrubbed, lunch and supper to plan, shopping to do and many
errands to run. This was one of the periods of my life when I was
“not working.”
I had three kids and a house, a dog and a husband, so my pity
party was lasting a little bit longer than usual that morning as I ate
my Grape Nuts.
The telephone rang just before 8 a.m. and my neighbor said sim-
ply, “You’d better get to the highway.”
I knew immediately that my son had been rgn over. I froze in
my tracks then instinctively went to check on the baby, who was
safe in her bed and the four-year-old who had by then awakened
and was deep in cartoon land. I told him to “stay right here.”
Something in my face and voice must have convinced him it would
be the right thing to do.The picture of him in his baggy pjs, eyes full
of fear, standing on the carport waiting for me when I returned,
lingers to this day.
I don’t remember driving my car to the highway, but I remember
getting out of the car and seeing my son lying on his back, soaking
wet and not moving. As I came nearer to him, he moaned and tried
to talk. He had been hit by a pickup truck, and knocked uncon-
scious into a ditch full of water.
Just before I got to him, he was pulled out of the water and tend-
ed to by the men in the truck that hit him. Who, by the way were not
at fault. In his excitement my little boy shot into traffic.
To make a very long and very traumatic story very short, I’ll just
say we were lucky. He had no broken bones, no lasting damage
except for a deep, ugly cut on his leg that the doctor called “a dirty
wound,” meaning, he said, that it would have to be sewed up from
the inside out. Medical personnel said the heavy book satchel pre-
vented a broken bone or worse damage to his leg.
He had a slight concussion and many, many bruises, bumps and
a lot of pain. All day long he called for his teacher, Louise Carlisle,
and for his little brother. ' 1
As things calmed down and the day wore on and things
improved in our household, I prayed constant prayers of thanksgiv-
ing and promised to he a better mother.
The jury’s still out on how well I kept that promise, but even today
when I start feeling eerry for myseft,v V remember that day -ancHhe
