For years, one of the mqst misunderstood businesses in Texas has
been the operation of nursing homes.
At long last, a Federal law has transformed the culture
of long-term care in this state. The law requires nursing
homes to do business under a new scenario aimed at
respecting the rights of the elderly. The new law requires
that the care given be adjusted to the likes and dislikes of
each patient.
In foliowing the law, operators of nursing homes are
* required to have an individual plan for the care of each
w*n°*1 patient. For instance,: instead of scheduling patient’s
i baths at a certain time each day, the baths will be given at
an hour that meets the desires of the patient.
In addition, each patient will be given a menu from which to choose
meals for the next day.
The objective is to reach a time when nursing homes will not have
the bleak atmosphere of a hospital but the comfort that you feel at
being In your own home. For instance, activity rooms and salons will
be given names and patients can make appointments as those do
who are living privately.
Certified Nursing Assistants will have quality time to spend with
each patient. At the same time, the long term facilities will be able to
save money and provide their residents with companionship, food
and activities that are not now available. ________________
Another change that is important for older Americans is the effort
being made to insure full information about each plan that seniors are
signing up for in the way of prescription drug plans.
It has been found that many did not understand that they have
many options in choosing plans.
The Coastal Bend Council of Governments Agency on Aging is
working to make sure seniors are fully informed. When it was learned
that a person was not offered options, the COG unenrolled him and
re-enrolled them in adifferent health care plan that is more beneficial
to the person. Depending on individual needs, they may or may not
be charged a co-pay._;__
