About
Honey?
COLLEGE STATION—Hon-
ey Is often touted aa "much
batter for - *t" than other sug-
ars. But la lt really?
Sally Springer, foods and
nutrition specialist, said that
honey is actually no more prac-
tical than sugar as a source
for adequate dally intake of
necessary nutrients.
"A tablespoon of honey pro-
vides more calories end car-
bohydrates than the same
amount of granulated, powder-
ed or brown sugar.
"It has lass calcium, phos-
phorus and Iron than brown
sugar. Honey contains mini-
mal amounts of thiamin, ribo-
flavin and ascorbic acid," the
specialist with the Texas Agri-
cultural Extension servloe,the
Texas A and M University
system, said.
She explained that there are
only »miii difference* la the
amounts of vltamina and min-
erala In honey and other
augart.
Honey la Invert sugar form-
ad by an onaymo from neotar
gatharod by bee*. It's com-
posed of airwrent kinds of
sugars, lnoiuuuig dextrose,
sucrose, levulooo and maltose,
oho said.
"Honey varies In composi-
tion and flavor, depending upon
the source of the nectar—
clover, orange blossom,
sage —and la sweeter than
common table sugar." 9
