Man shot on I-35E dies
Police said Verland Johan-
sen, 65, of Flower Mound has
died in a hospital after being
shot in the head Tuesday while
driving along Interstate 35E in
Lewisville.
The suspect in the shooting,
53-year-old Stephen Bielicke of
Lewisville, was being held in the
Denton County Jail. A charge of
murder will be added in place of
the original charge of aggravated
assault, according to a news re-
lease issued by Lewisville police
late Friday.
Johansen was driving on the
northbound service road late
Tuesday when he crossed onto
the highway and struck the cen-
ter guardrail in the 200 block of
South I-35E, police said
Wednesday.
When officers arrived at the
scene, they discovered Johansen
had been shot in the head. Wit-
nesses told police that the driver
of a small sport utility vehicle
shot at Johansen and his vehicle.
Police said Wednesday that
they do not believe the two men
knew each other, but that wit-
nesses said Bielicke had been
screaming at Johansen without
provocation Tuesday evening at
a Lewisville business.
Police said they finked Biel-
icke to reports of a man bran-
dishing a gun at a Lewisville
convenience store. A semiauto-
matic firearm and ammunition
found in his possession matched
shell casings found at the scene
of the highway shooting, accord-
ing to police.

Swimmer drowns in lake
A 30-year-old man drowned
in Lewisville Lake on Friday.
Denton County Game War-

man was swimmingwith several
friends at Willow Grove Park
when he went off a ledge in the
lake and “never came back up.”
One of the men he was swim-
ming with called for help at
about 6:25 p.m., and the Lewis-
ville Fire Department dive team
recovered his body at 7:35 p.m.,
McCuistion said.
He said this is the second
time a drowning has occurred
this year at the “very same loca-
tion.” The man’s identity was not
released Friday.
Officials said the victim was
not wearing a fife jacket and do
not believe drinking was involved.
“This is just a bad, unfortunate
accident,” McCuistion said.
