Mailbag shows

16-year-old to be charged as adult
preme Court in 2005 banned
the execution of anyone under
the age of 18 at the time a crime
was committed.
The brothers are accused of
fatally stabbing their parents,
two brothers and a sister. The
dead are parents David Bever,
52, and April Bever, 44, and
siblings Daniel Bever, 12,
Christopher Bever, 7, and Vic-
toria Bever, 5.
An unidentified 13-year-old
sister was in serious but stable
condition in a hospital and an
unnamed 2-year-old sister
wasn’t harmed and was placed
in state custody.
With the siblings jailed, de-
tectives continued to search for
a motive, scouring social media
sites believed to belong to Rob-
ert Bever in hopes of finding
clues. Cpl. Leon Calhoun, a
spokesman for the depart-
ment, said both siblings were
cooperating with investigators.
Calhoun said the grisly
scene was difficult to cope with
for the investigators, who are
accustomed to working only
one or two homicides a year in
the low-crime enclave.
“Most of the detectives are
parents, and seeing the bodies
of a 5-year-old, a 7-year-old,
and 12-year-old, they are see-
ing the brutality and grue-
someness of the crime scene,”
Calhoun said. “If it doesn’t take
an emotional toll on you, you
aren’t human.”
County Dis-
trict Attorney

wasn’t immediately clear in jail
records when either sibling is
due in court.
Trial as an adult means that
the 16-year-old could get a
maximum sentence of life in
prison or life in prison without
parole if he’s convicted of first
degree murder, Kunzweiler

homa 16-year-old will be
charged as an adult alongside
his older brother in the stab-

three siblings at a suburban
Tulsa home, authorities said
Saturday.
The suspect will face the
same counts as his 18-year-old
brother, Robert Bever, who is
accused in a booking docu-

ere are real letters from
folks like you to The
Watchdog. Note: I use
senders’ initials because you can
write to me without worrying
that your name will be pub-
lished without permission.
Dear Watchdog: You seem to
be very enamored of the modem
adnfinistrative state, reflected by
your paean to die U.S. Consumer
Financial Protection Bureau. I
think you have too much faith in
government... I wish you would
consider the benefits of deregula-
tion (airlines, trucking) instead of
being such a big fan of govern-
ment. — M.A.
Dear M.A.: You should see
my mail every day for the past 10
years since I started doing this
job. It’s a paean to the idea that
some businesses are so rigged
against us that they need to be
watched by regulators to protect
us. Theory is wonderful — but
the reality is that millions of peo-
ple get hurt all the time and my
mailbag shows it — and I care!
Dear Watchdog: A guy
showed up at our door from an
alarm company to inspect our
keypad. My husband asked him
why he would show up without
an appointment. He assured us
this was normal business proce-
dures. He said they work an area
until all inspections are com-
plete. He told us the model
number on our keypad. I can
find no model number. It was so
startling and unexpected. We
sent him away. Do you know
anything about this? — P.F.
Dear P.F.: I have a rule that
nobody at my door is honest
They are like flies. Swat them.
And obviously you and your
husband are good at that. Put a
No Soliciting sign on your door.
If you want to get serious, write
beneath it, “We sue violators.
You are being recorded.” That’s
what’s on my front door.
Dear Watchdog: We have
had numerous friends tell us
about LifeLock identity protec-
tion. Is buying this service some-
thing you would recommend? If
so, which level of protection
would you suggest? — J.W.
Dear JW.: Funny you
should ask. This week, LifeLock
was humiliated by the Federal
Trade Commission, which ac-
cused the company of falsely
promising it would protect So-
cial Security numbers, credit
card numbers and bank ac-
counts. LifeLock also didn’t alert
customers as quickly as it prom-
ised when their accounts were
compromised. I dumped the
company in 2010 after the feds
accused it of overpromising in a
much bigger case.
Should you have identity pro-
tection? Probably only if you’ve
been compromised in some way.
Until that happens, just keep
checking your accounts regularly
for false charges.
Dear Watchdog: You recent-
ly wrote that you used the trick
of pretending to be calling to
praise the company for some
wonderful experience you’ve
had with the company so that
you can get the address to write
directly to the boss of the com-
pany. But you really want to
make a complaint Isn’t that ly-
ing? Is lying permitted in
Watchdog Nation? — BJM.
Dear BJVL: Watchdog Na-
tion is built on truth. I made a
conscious decision to have this
one gimme. I figure it hurts no
one but gives the aggrieved par-
ty a very easy way to contact abig
boss who is otherwise hidden

really do. While our level of grief
is not near his level of grief, we’re
still grieving with him,” Chrest-
man said.
Sgt. Holmquist joined the
Marines in 2009 and served two
tours of duty in Afghanistan.
After the funeral, over 60
people in Marine, Navy and oth-
er military uniforms saluted as
an honor guard of Marine pall-
bearers brought Holmquist’s
flag-draped coffin out to a wait-
ing hearse.
Escorted by a state trooper
and six motorcyclists with the
Patriot Guard Riders, the funer-
al procession left for a local cem-
etery7 and a private burial with
military honors.
Holmquist was among four
Marines and a sailor who were
killed in the July 16 attack. Police
later killed the attacker during a
shootout.

GRANTSBURG, Wis. - A
small Wisconsin town said
goodbye on Saturday to a Ma-
rine killed in the recent attack on
a Navy-Marine reserve center in
Chattanooga, Tennessee.
A dozen members of a Ma-
rine Corps honor guard stood
watch as fellow Marines in
dress blue uniforms carried the
coffin of Sgt. Carson Holm-
quist into Grantsburg Senior
High School for a public visita-
tion Saturday.
The 25-year-old Holmquist
grew up in the northwestern
tips.

‘We’re here for the families.
That’s our priority now. We
grieve with them, and they will
not be forgotten,” Marine Forc-
es Reserve spokesman Capt.
Andrew Chrestman told re-
porters.
Chrestman said he had spo-
ken with Holmquist’s father,
Tom Holmquist of Grantsburg,
who is “obviously grieving and
going through difficult times.”

Dear Watchdog: We are se-
nior citizens and are probably
overly cautious about answering
our landline phone if we do not
recognize who is on Caller ID.
Something very strange has
happened several times over the
past months. We get a call and
Caller ID shows my husband’s
name and our phone number.
How are they able to put in our
info which looks like we are call-
ing ourselves? — G.H.
Dear G.H.: There is some-
thing called “Caller ID Spoofing”
and you can buy credits on the
Internet. I could call you from
my phone and show the White
House, the FBI, anyone. Where
do they get your number and
name? Where I found it — on
whitepages.com. You’re listed.
Dear Watchdog: Should I be
concerned about a phone call
saying “the IRS is filing a lawsuit
against me’? I have received two
such phone calls lately. — S.P.
Dear S.P.: Almost everyone
in America who answers a
phone has gotten these calls this
year. In America, it’s now Mom,
apple pie and fake IRS calls.
Dear Watchdog: I opened
my AT&T U-verse bill for TV
and Internet. For the past 12
months I paid $108. The new
bill was for $170. I contacted
AT&T customer service who in-
formed me that the bundle
package expired. I questioned
the price increase, then switched
to Time Warner and will be pay-
ing $110. — M.F.
Dear M.F,: You made a cru-
cial error in the modem world
that applies not only to bundles
but to electricity, satellite radio
and other time-based contracts.
You didn’t mark in your family
calendar the bundle’s expiration
date and then a notation a week
or so before that date to call and
pretend you want to cancel. Then
use these phrases: “I saw it cheap-
er on the Internet” “Do you have
any discounts, deals or specials?”
“I’m also calling your competi-
tors.” If you don’t do this, your
rates go up. Its the new7 rule of
survival in the modem world.
