The first 18 days of August saw an average
high temperature of 100.5 degrees.
Indeed, this was overall the lOth-hottest
year ever for that 18-day period. But a
welcome and unusually strong August cold
front arrived last Wednesday. Thursday’s
high was only 75. That didn’t last. It has
warmed up again this weekend. But the
worst of the summer’s heat should be
behind us. The average high of 97 dropped
to 96 this past week and will fall to 93 by
the first of September.

Domestic disturbance
results in multiple charges
A 27-year-old man and a 35-
year-old women were arrested
after police responded to a do-
mestic disturbance call Friday
night at a motel in the 4000
block of Interstate 35.
The man consented to a
search and was charged with
possession of marijuana and a
controlled substance.
The woman was removed
from the property by manage-
ment and arrested on a public
intoxication charge.
According to a police report,
the woman asked an officer to
help her find her keys.
As the officer looked for them
in her purse, he reportedly
found a small amount of mari-
juana.
Both were still in Denton city
jail Saturday, and their bail
amounts were to be determined.
man was being held in Denton
city jail on a charge of driving
with an invalid license and on
multiple outstanding war-
rants.

meadow Drive — Police re-
sponded to a report of a vehicle
burglary and discovered the
neighbors’ vehicles were also
broken into overnight.
The woman who reported
the theft told police that be-
tween 8 a.m. Thursday and 5:30
p.m. Friday, someone had stolen
her husband’s wallet from an
unlocked car.
She told police two of her
neighbors’ vehicles had been
burglarized in the same time

Both Texas Woman’s University and the University of
North Texas have banned smoking on their grounds, both
indoors and outside.
The man, who has out-
standing warrants in Collin
County and Denton County,
was pulled over on Friday for
going 66 mph in a 45 mph
zone, according to a police re-
port.
But those bans aren’t tied to the city of Denton’s ordi-
nance that bans smoking in the workplace — which will
extend to local bars by 2017.
The city doesn’t have the authority to enforce its ordi-
nance on state property.
The city does have the authority to enforce the smoking
ban at hospitals, but enforcement stops at 30 feet away
from entrances, said city spokeswoman Lindsey Baker.
A business may ban smoking on its property, but en-
forcement beyond 30 feet from its doors becomes a private
matter, Baker said.
