RAINIEST YEAR EVER

Rain Likely/
Chilly
Earlier this year, I thought it
was a foregone conclusion
that 2015 would go down in
history as the rainiest year
ever. After all, we had nearly
reached our average annual
rainfall total of 36.14 inches by
the end of June. But from July
through mid-October, we
went back into a terrible
drought. Then, the last week
of October, El Nino finally
lived up to its promise and
heavy rains returned. Over
this holiday weekend, the
Dallas-Fort Worth area surpassed the old annual rainfall
record of 53.54 inches, and did it in only 11 months.

Report: Suspect named in
attempted kidnapping
Police have named a suspect
in connection with the attempt-
ed kidnapping of a 13-year-old
boy Friday morning on the 100
block of South Wood Street.
Police were able to get the
suspect’s license plate and track
the vehicle back to a residence,
but no arrests have been made,
according to a police report.
Other reports
2200 block of South In-
terstate 35 — Fifteen bras were
reportedly stolen between
Thursday and Friday afternoon
from a Victoria’s Secret.
Police were informed there
were no witnesses or evidence at
the time of the report, and no ar-
rests have been made. The bras’
value is estimated to be between
$750 and $2,500.
2700 block of University
Drive — A 53-year-old woman
with two prior convictions was
arrested Friday night after alleg-
edly shoplifting less than
$2,500 worth of merchandise
from Wal-Mart.
According to a police report,
the woman was detained at the
store, and police determined she
committed the offense after an
investigation. She was taken to
Denton City Jail and charged
with theft of less than $2,500.

According to Jim Ken-
nedy, insect expert at the
University of North Texas,
the kissing bug, or Tiato-
ma, can be easily confused
with other true bugs in its
insect order, Hemiptera. A “wheel bug,” or Arilus cristatus,
for example, looks somewhat similar and is common in this
area. Wheel bugs aren’t aggressive, but they will bite. Its
bite is painful, but it doesn’t carry the parasite the kissing
bug carries.
The parasite, Trypanosome, causes Chagas disease as it
buries itself in the heart muscle and the gut. The disease
can be life-threatening to the family dog and to people if
your doctor or veterinarian does not diagnose the infection
in time.

chief incident in the Lowry

From Sunday, Nov. 22, to Fri-

sometimes got bad phone num-
bers or directions. He started a
website, helpimhomeless.com,
with a list oflocal resources. Later,
he created a booklet of resources
printed in a large font with ink
that won’t smear in the rain.
The booklet is now used by
police, Dallas residents, homeless
people and Our Calling’s “search
and rescue” teams. The volunteer
teams visit camps, wooded areas
and other sites to bring water,
food and clothes. They encourage
the homeless to move into shel-
ters and direct them to support
services, such as drug treatment
and counseling.
Our Calling also uses a robust
mobile database. Staff and volun-
teers use iPads to record interac-
tions with each person, who is list-
ed by name, photo and personal
history.
Our Calling’s iPhone app,
launched in July, is like the web-
site and resource booklet, but on
steroids, Walker said. The app is
called Our Calling. An Android
version will launch by January.

DALLAS — A shower. A meal.
A place to sleep. Those basic
needs come to mind when most
think of the homeless.
Our Calling, a Dallas nonprof-
it, has given the homeless an
iPhone app. The faith-based non-
profit is using technology to help
people who live under bridges,
near crack houses and in en-
campments.
The Our Calling app can be
used by the homeless to find shel-
ters, food pantries, free meals and
job training. Others can use it to
snap a photo to direct staff and
volunteers to the GPS location
Kissing bugs have been seen in the area since the 1800s
and are easy to identify, Kennedy said. They are quite strik-
ing, with cone-shaped heads, thin antennae and thin legs. All
the species are black, or very dark brown, with orange (or
red or yellow) stripes on the edge of their thorax and bod-
ies. (To see images of other kinds of bugs often confused
with the kissing bug, visit kissingbug.tamu.edu/found-a-
bug.)
day:
■ University of North
Texas police made four arrests,
issued two citations and gath-
ered information for seven re-
ports.
— Julian Gill
Because the parasite lives in the bug’s feces, experts
recommend you don’t touch a kissing bug with your bare
hands.
Denton County Crime Stoppers will
pay a reward of up to $1000 for
information leading to an arrest in
these or other crimes. Callers will
remain anonymous. Call
1-800-388-TIPS (8477). Reach the
Denton police narcotics tip line at
940-565-5801
A kissing bug bite is not painful, and they are most active
at dawn and dusk. Good sanitation that keeps other pests
out of your home will help keep the kissing bug out of your
home, too. Kennedy and other insect experts encourage
people to turn off outside lights, which can attract the bugs
and to check pet areas and crawl spaces for infestations.
— Peggy Heinkel-Wolfe

in need.

rector of Our Calling, learned
about the power of technology
while working as a software de-
veloper during college and semi-
nary.
