If this was any other Masters,
Rory Mcllroy would be the talk
of golf and die biggest story of
the week. That he’s not — at least
right now — is only because a
guy named Tiger Woods decid-

Augusta National.
And that’s not necessarily a
bad thing as Mcllroy prepares

Police: Ex-NFL player Kwame Harris
tried to bite officer after being asleep
SAN FRANCISCO — Former 49ers and Raiders
olfensive lineman Kwame Harris was tied to two hit-
and-run crashes in San Francisco before falling asleep
in a running car and trying to bite a police officer, au-
thorities say.
Officers on patrol were told a man needed help
Sunday night and found the 33-year-old sleeping in a
parked, running car in a chained-off driveway, police
spokeswoman Grace Gatpandan told The San Fran-
cisco Chronicle on Tuesday.
The officers woke Harris and tried to handcuff
him because the car was on and there were people
around, Gatpandan said. Harris resisted and tried to
bite an officer’s hand, she said, adding that paramed-
ics determined he was intoxicated.
An attorney who represented Harris in a past case
said Tuesday that he believes Harris would hire a new
lawyer, who would decide whether to comment on
the arrest.

MLB sets spring training record
NEW YORK — Major League Baseball has set a
spring training attendance record, breaking the 4
million mark this year and averaging nearly 8,400
fans a game.
The league said Tuesday that attendance was up 117
percent from last season’s total of3,610,738, and the re-
cord average was a 3.8 percent increase from a year ago.
This time, the 481 dates drew 4,034,708 fans for
an average of8,388. That topped the previous record
of3,823,479 set in 2013, while the average attendance
eclipsed the previous best of 8,078 in 2014.
The Chicago Cubs drew 222,415 fans to Sloan Park
in Mesa, Arizona, the largest spring training atten-
dance total for any team in history.
The Boston Red Sox sold out each of their 15 com-
pleted home games. They have sold out all 63 Grape-
fruit League games at JetBlue Park since its 2012
opening.

Basketball
Illinois 12-year-old ties for first in ESPN’s
bracket challenge for NCAA Tournament
HAWTHORN WOODS, 111. - A sixth-grade boy
from suburban Chicago completed a near-perfect
bracket predicting the NCAA men’s basketball tour-
nament, finishing in a tie for first in ESPN’s massive
annual contest.
Sam Holtz said ESPN officials told him that is he
ineligible to claim the top prize — a $20,000 gift card
and a trip to the Maui Invitational basketball tourna-
ment — because he’s 12 years old. ESPN requires par-
ticipants to be at least 18.
“I’m irritated,” Holtz told the Daily Herald. “Yes,
I’m still proud of my accomplishment, but I’m not
happy with the decision.”
Finishing with the best bracket does not equal an
automatic claim to the prize. ESPN awards the prize
through a random draw of the brackets that were
among the top 1 percent in the contest — about
115,700 this year. Kevin Ota, a spokesman for ESPN
Digital Media, said the network is putting together
some kind of prize for Holtz.
“We plan to have fun with this,” Ota said Tuesday.
“The great thing is that this kid beat all these experts
out there.”
The tournament includes 67 games and Holtz
missed only six. He was perfect picking games played in
the Sweet 16, Elite Eight and Final Four.
Out of 115 million who entered a bracket on ESPNs
website, Sam finished tied for first with 1,830 points af-
ter Duke beat Wisconsin 68-63 in Monday’s champi-
onship game.

on both Nos. 13 and 15 in the fi-
nal round, only to come away
with bogeys on his way to a tie
for eighth.
There were also times,
though, that Mcllroy thought
not being aggressive enough
cost him strokes because he
didn’t commit totally on shots to
safe parts of the green.
What’s especially frustrating
to Mcllroy — aside from shoot-
ing 80 in the final round in 2011
to blow a four-shot lead — is that
his game seems ideally suited for
both the course and conditions
here.

“It’s the one that should set
up the best for me just with my
ball flight and being comfortable
off the tee here, especially being
able to turn the ball over from
right to left and all that,” he said.
“If I can play the way I know I
can around here and just have a
good week on the greens, then
there’s no reason why I shouldn’t
have a good chance.”
