BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Western Kentucky
coach Jeff Brohm says running back Leon Allen will
miss the rest of the season after injuring his left knee
injury Thursday in a victory over Louisiana Tech.
Brohm’s statement Friday night did not specify Al-
len’s injury or his treatment, but said the senior “will
have the full complement of resources and total sup-
port of our medical team and coaching staff as he goes
through the rehabilitation process.”
Allen, who rushed for 1,542 yards and 13 touch-
downs last season, was injured on an incomplete pass
play in the third quarter of the Hilltoppers’ 31-28 vic-
tory. His left knee was bent backward at an awkward
angle as he went down from a tackle.

Elliott snaps Xfinity winless streak
RICHMOND, Va. — Chase Elliott got away from
pole-sitter Kyle Busch on a restart with 26 laps to go
Friday and won the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at
Richmond International Raceway to end a 39-event
winless streak.
Busch, starting fourth to Elliott’s first on the restart,
appeared to make contact with the defending series
champion, but Elliott was able to get away enough so
that Busch could never put a bumper on him again.
“We’ve had a couple of opportunities this year to
win races, and I’ve done my fair share of messing that
up,” Elliott said.
Elliott jumped from third to second in the stand-
ings, 21 points behind lOth-place finisher Chris
Buescher of Prosper with eight races remaining.
It was the first time in 23 races at Richmond that
the winner wasn’t a Sprint Cup Series regular.
Busch was second, followed by Brian Scott, Joey
Logano and Erik Jones.
One of the stories of the race was Josh Berry, a late
model racer who made his third start in the series and
looked like a seasoned veteran in the No. 88 Chevrolet
for JR Motorsports. He ran down Busch with about 50
laps to go for fifth place, passed Logano for fourth and
had the strongest car on long green-flag runs.
But Berry’s team struggled on pit road all night,
and when a caution flew with him running fourth
with just over 30 laps to go, he emerged from pit road
running ninth and without enough time to make a
comeback. He rallied to finish seventh.

final season. Based on his histo-

NFL: Pats didn’t manipulate headsets
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Philadelphia coach
Chip Kelly has heard air traffic control coming in over
the headsets he uses to communicate with his staff.
Former Ravens coach Brian Billick said he once
heard a pizza delivery guy.
So when Pittsburgh coaches started picking up the
home radio broadcast on their headsets, there
shouldn’t have been any cause for suspicion. Except
they were at the home of the twice-convicted New
England Patriots.
On the night the Super Bowl champions were
hoping to turn from “Deflategate” to their title de-
fense, the Patriots instead found themselves denying
new allegations of shenanigans from Steelers coach
Mike Tomlin and a chorus around the NFL com-
plaining that the headset technology seems to fail
more often in New England.
The audio interference was “entirely attributable
to an electrical issue made worse by the inclement
weather,” NFL spokesman Michael Signora said Fri-
day. “The Patriots had nothing to do with it.”
fort at Richmond International
Raceway, and Jamie McMurray
will qualify for the Chase for the
first time when he takes the
green flag.
That leaves four spots up for
grabs, and a first-time winner
could jumble the standings.
Should tonight produce a repeat
winner, then Gordon, Ryan
Newman, Paul Menard and
Clint Bowyer are in position to
take the remaining slots.
Newman makes it no matter
what by finishing 31st or better;
Menard needs to finish ninth or
better. Newman and Gordon are
guaranteed to make the Chase if
there’s a repeat winner.
Bowyer, with a repeat win-
ner, needs to finish 28th or bet-
ter to clinch.
Newman wants to be in-
formed of where others are run-
ning. He joked that it will be ob-
vious he’s in trouble if Greg Bif-
fle, Kasey Kahne and Aric Almi-
rola — drivers directly behind
Bowyer in the standings — are
running 1-2-3 in the final five
laps.

Saunders suffers cancer setback
WEST DIVISION
MINNEAPOLIS — Flip Saunders has been hos-
pitalized for testing and treatment following a set-
back in his fight with cancer, leaving his leadership
roles with the Minnesota Timberwolves indefinitely
to focus on his health.
The Timberwolves confirmed Friday that assis-
tant Sam Mitchell will take over as interim coach for
Saunders, who also is president of basketball opera-
tions. General manager Milt Newton’s responsibili-
ties will expand, too, with the absence of the 60-year-
old Saunders, who was diagnosed this summer with
Hodgkin lymphoma.
The team said Saunders recently experienced com-
plications from chemotherapy treatments. Training
camp starts Sept. 28. The season opener is Oct. 28.
