After the arrival of a
strong cold front Satur-
day morning, tempera-
tures dipped into the
30s across much of
North Texas this morn-
ing. But that shouldn’t
come as much of a
surprise. This is the
time of year when we
start looking for our
first freeze. The average
date of our first freeze is Nov. 22. But that can vary tremen-
dously from year to year. Our earliest recorded freeze oc-
curred on Oct. 22,1898. But in the winter of 1971-72, our first
freeze didn’t occur until Jan. 4!

CHATTER FROM OUR SITES
MY NEIGHBOR CLEANED HIS DEER UNDER
HIS CARPORT. IS THAT ALLOWED?
A coalition has formed to ex-
plore and improve race relations
in Denton. People responding
online discussed their take on
the Denton area’s racial land-
scape.
Denton doesn’t expressly forbid hunters from processing
meat where others might see it. But the city does have a
general nuisance ordinance that prohibits creating odors
and similar nuisances.
Most hunters will “field dress,” or gut, the animal soon
after killing it, to keep from contaminating the meat. Some
hunters will also skin the animal and pack its quarters on ice
before bringing it home. But not ail hunters are able to do
that, and leaving the skin on during transport also helps
protect the meat.
Many hunter education programs encourage hunters to
keep the processing of deer, or any other animal, out of
sight because many people, particularly young children,
haven’t seen it before and may not be prepared.
Hunting season opened earlier this month, and depend-
ing on the animal and the county, continues into January.
