Astros take 2-1 series lead over Royals
HOUSTON — Dallas Keuchel remained perfect
at home with seven gutsy innings and Chris Carter
homered Sunday, leading the Houston Astros to a 4-2
win against the Kansas City Royals to take a 2-1 lead
in the American League Division Series.
The Astros could wrap up the best-of-five series
with a win against the defending AL champions in
Game 4 on Monday.
Keuchel (2-0) worked out of jam after jam, allow-
ing five hits and one run with seven strikeouts after
going 15-0 at home this season, a modem major
league record.

Dodgers’ Utley suspended two games
NEW YORK — Los Angeles Dodgers second
baseman Chase Utley has been suspended two play-
off1 games by Major League Baseball for his takeout
slide that broke New York Mets shortstop Ruben Te-
jada’s right leg.
In handing down the penalty Sunday night, Major
League Baseball executive Joe Torre called it an illegal
slide. Umpires ruled it a legal play Saturday night.
Torre says after a thorough review from all angles,
he concluded Utley’s slide merited a penalty.
There was no immediate word on whether Utley
would appeal, which could keep him eligible to play
Games 3 and 4 this week in New York. The best-of-
five NL Division Series is tied at one apiece.

Presidents Cup
The Presidents Cup, packed
with raw emotion and endless
nerves, was unlike any other
over the last 10 years.
Except for the outcome.
The Americans won for the
sixth straight time Sunday when
Chris Kirk made a 15-foot birdie
putt to win his match in a stun-
ning turnaround on the final
hole, and Bill Haas provided a
storybook ending with the win-
ning point for his team and for
his father.
“A moment I’ll never forget,”
U.S. captain Jay Haas said, so
choked up when it ended that he
couldn’t speak.
Haas used a captain’s pick on
his son, sent him off in the 12th
and final singles match at the
Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea
and then saw Bill Haas hit all the
right shots to hold off Bae Sang-
moon for a 2-up victory.
The 151/2-141/2 margin was
the slimmest since the famous
tie in South Africa in 2003. Not
since 2005 has the Presidents
Cup been decided by the final
match.
That’s what the International
team wanted when it demanded
the number of matches be re-
duced (from 34 to 30). It almost
got something even better — the
shiny gold trophy that again
stays with the Americans.
“Irrelevant of the outcome —
we obviously would have loved
to have won — we put on a show
of golf this week,” captain Nick
Price said.
The final session was not
without its share of heartbreak.
Anirban Lahiri, the first play-
er from India to make the Inter-
national team, battled Kirk
shot-for-shot over the final hour
holes and looked like a winner
when he played a delicate pitch
to perfection on the par-5 18th
and had 4 feet for birdie. Kirk’s
chip ran 15 feet by. Based on the
status of other matches still on
the course, it looked like the In-
ternational team would finally
emerge a winner.
And then Kirk made his putt
on the final turn, and one of the
most stoic players on the PGA
Tour unleashed a fist pump.
Moments later, Lahiri missed.
His putt caught the right
edge of the cup and spun out,
and he dropped his putter over
his back in disbelief.
“I have to give credit to Chris
for making that putt,” Lahiri
said. “These things are scripted,
I guess, and I wasn’t in the script
this time.”
Phil Mickelson had an un-
beaten record (3-0-1) for the
third time in the Presidents Cup,
trouncing Chari SchwartzeL
Zach Johnson also went unbeat-
en in easily beating Jason Day,
the PGA champion and No. 2
player in the world who failed to
win a match this week.

USC’s Sarkisian taking leave of absence
LOS ANGELES — Southern California coach
Steve Sarkisian is taking an indefinite leave of ab-
sence after athletic director Pat Haden determined
that the troubled coach is “not healthy.”
Haden announced the decision in a hastily called
news conference Sunday after Sarkisian didn’t show
up for practice.
“I think it’s the right thing for our team, and I’ve
always got to do what’s right for our team and for our
school,” Haden said.
Offensive coordinator Clay Helton will take charge
of the Trojans (3-2,1-2 Pac-12), who have lost two of
their last three games. USC visits No. 14 Notre Dame
(5-1) on Saturday.

Heisman hopeful Chubb out for season
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia coach Mark Richt says
star running back Nick Chubb is out for the season
with a left knee injury.
A Heisman Trophy hopeful, Chubb was injured on
the first play of the game in Saturday’s loss at Ten-
nessee.
Georgia’s director of sports medicine said in a re-
lease Sunday that Chubb suffered damage to several
ligaments and cartilage but did not have an ACL tear.
Director Ron Courson added the damage is repair-
able, full recovery is expected and surgery will take
place within two weeks.
Edsall went 22-34 after taking over for Ralph
Freidgen before the 2011 season. He accepted the job
after going 74-70 in 12 years at Connecticut.

Djokovic beats Nadal for China Open title
BEIJING — Novak Djokovic defeated Rafael Na-
dal 6-2, 6-2 Sunday to win his sixth China Open title
and improve his record at the tournament to a ster-
ling 29-0.
Djokovic had seven aces to none for his Spanish
rival, and saved both break points he faced in the
match, which was the 45th between the two players.
Nadal still leads 23-22 but hasn’t beaten Djokovic
since the French Open final last year and hasn’t pre-
vailed on hard courts since the 2013 U.S. Open final.
