IS IT LEGAL TO FIRE A GUN IN THE CITY LIMITS?
No, not even with blanks. There are a handful of excep-
tions — live fire at a sanctioned firing range or a gunsmith’s
shooting gallery is allowed. Firing blanks for a theatrical or
ceremonial event is OK. Police officers are exempt when
firing in the line of duty. Individuals are exempt when justifi-
ably defending their property or person. In the city’s code of
ordinances, the City Council has reserved the authority to
grant certain individual permissions.
If you hear gunfire in the city limits, even if you’re not sure
whether it was gunfire, Denton police Officer Orlando Hinojo-
sa says, “Call 911.”
