Neat William Scheitel (1929 - 2014)
Neal William Scheitel of Aubrey, died on
I August 4, 2014, in Denton, Texas. He was
bom on January 17, 1929, in Falls City,
Nebraska, the son of Homer and Esther
(Bissegger) Scheitel of Falls City. He spent his
| childhood on the family farm with his favorite
dog "Shop," attended grade school at the
Sunny Hill {"Pig Hill") School, and graduated from the Falls
City High School in 1946 He was active in the 4-H Club, the
Evangelical Church youth group, and bought his first car, a
1937 Chevy Coupe.
After gradualion the family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska,
where he attended the Lincoln School of Commerce. He
graduated from a course in Advanced Accounting, and went
to work in the Accounting Department at the American Bus
Lines in Lincoln, Nebraska. While working there, he met his
future wife, Audrey Weiler, of Lincoln, at the Cornhusker
Coffee Shop, and they went on their first date in November
1949.
Neal was a Korean war-era Veteran. On December 13,
1950, he was inducted into the U.S. Army at Fort
Leavenworth, Kansas, and attended Basic Training at Camp
Carson, Colorado. On July 2, 1951, Neal was sent to Yuma,
Arizona, where he was a finance clerk and a construction
rigger in the 412th Engineering Construction Battalion. He
helped build roads and hangers for the Yuma Test Station,
with the U,S. Army, 412th Army Construction Engineers.
Neal married Audrey Weiler on December 22, 1951, at the
Saint Mary's Cathedral in Lincoln, Nebraska, with a breakfast
before, and a reception afterward- At 5:00 p m, they drove to
Omaha, Nebraska, and stayed at the Blackstone Hotel, which
was "the place to stay." They drove back to Lincoln to have
Christmas with their families. When they left for Yuma, Neal
was driving his 1949 Ford. They picked up some of Nears
Army buddies in Kansas on their way through, heading to
Albuquerque, where they celebrated New Years.
In July 1952, they went to Camp Roberts, in Paso Robles,
California, again with the 412th, which was a reserve unit
activated out of Arizona. Neal's unit was attached from
Nebraska, along with units from Michigan, Kansas, South
Dakota, and Texas. He was discharged as a Corporal in
1957,
In early December 1952, Neal put Audrey on a train out of
San Francisco to Lincoln, Nebraska. She was pregnant with
their first child. On December 16, 1952, Neal was released
from active duty, and transferred to the Army Reserves, He
drove home to Lincoln, dropping off his Army buddies in
Kansas on the way, then returned to work at American Bus
Lines. His first two daughters were born while they were living
in Lincoln.
In 1955, Neal moved with the family to Dallas, Texas,
when American Bus Lines merged with Continental
Trailways. He made their home in Dallas, where their third
daughter was born,
In 1966, he went to work for Western Sales Limited, and
moved with the family to the company office in Geneva,
Switzerland. Western sales later became the Overseas Inns
Inc.
In 1971, they moved again, this time to the country of
Luxembourg, when Overseas Inns changed locations. The
company operated hotel properties in Luxembourg, Belgium,
Germany and Spain, and built Continental Trailways buses in
Belgium, to be shipped to the U.S.
While- in Luxembourg, Neal was an avid supporter of the
U.S. Marine Guard Detachment at the American Embassy.
He also formed a social group fondly referred to as the
"Luxembourg Cowboys." He later named his ranch in Texas
the "LC Ranch" in honor of the group, many of whom would
travel to Texas to visit them there.
Neal retired as the President and CEO of Overseas Inns,
and split time between their home in Luxembourg, and a
place in Bozeman, Montana. In 1987 they moved to a ranch
in Aubrey, Texas. He was an avid golfer, and stayed active
raising longhorn cattle, developing real estate in the local
area, and traveling to visit with family.
Neal was a 64-year member of the Lancaster Masons
Lodge 54, and a Master Mason. He was also a member of
American Legion Post 71 in Denton. He was a founding
member and Liletime Member, of the Aubrey, Texas,
Chamber of Commerce, and a founding member of the
Aubrey Education Foundation. He was the 2005 Citizen ol
the Year for the Aubrey Chamber of Commerce. He was a
member ol the Immaculate Conception Church in Denton.
Neal was preceded in death by his parents Homer and
Esther Scheitel,
He is survived by his wife Audrey (Weiler) Scheitel: sister
Delores (Scheitel) Els (Jack); daughters Nancy (Scheitel)
Moore (Steve), Connie (Scheitel) Pelphrey. Kerry (Scheitel)
Johnson (Andrew W.); grandchildren Tara (Vandiver)
Robertson (Mark), Sean Pelphrey, Vanessa (Vandiver)
Ansbach (Michael), Jessica Pelphrey, Andrew N, Johnson
(Lauren); great-grandchildren Andrew Robertson, Josephine
Robertson, Andrew G. Johnson, Cittadinl Ansbach, Vincenzo
Ansbach, and Liam Johnson.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2014, from
6-8 p.m. at DeBerry Funeral Directors. The funeral Mass will
be held on Friday, August 8, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Tim
Thompson officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Aubrey
Education Foundation, Aubrey, Texas, or the Lewisville
Education Foundation, Lewisville. Texas.

Effie Lewellen Smith
Effie Lewellen Smith, 92, of Denton, went to
be with her family in heaven on Tuesday,
August 5, 2014. She was born on July 12,
1922, in Chichasha, OK, to Thomas Jefferson
Lewellen and Mary Grovina Newman
Jjf Lewellen. She was a member of the Gateway
Baptist Church.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 9,
2014, at 11:00 am at Rosolawn Memorial Park with Rev,
Buddy Owens officiating.
Effie is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Ann Polk;
grandchildren, Kathi Randolph and Deborah Pittsirger;
great-grandchildren, Jacklyn Platt, Clinton Moon, Monica
Moon, and Austin Pitlsinger; and great-great-grandchildren,
Haylee Moon, Brylee Moon, and Riley Platt, She is preceded
in death by her parents.

v • Lera Roach Lawler died peacefully at her
home on August 4, 2014, with family by her
side. She- was born February 9.1918, in rural
Lamar County, Texas. She was preceded in
t * * death by her parents, John Clayton Roach
^ and Amy Spear Roach, her five sisters, and
her husband of more than 60 years, James
Doyle Lawler. She is survived by her only child, Susan Lawler
Davis; grandson, Leigh W. Davis and his wife Cheryl;
grandson, Allan James Davis and his wife Angela;
great-grandchildren, Jillian, Nicholas, Anderson, and Aidan
Davis; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Though employed when younger, Lera spent most of her
adult years as a loving wife, mother, and homemaker. She
participated in civic and charitable activities including being a
Fifty Year Member of the Grand Chapter of Texas Order of
the Eastern Star, a member of the Greater Denton Women's
Club, and, later, a member of the CCA Charity League of
Lewisville and the Resume Club of Lewisville.
Lera and her husband were longtime members of
Creekwood Christian Church, 2660 Forest Vista Dr., Flower
Mound, Texas 75028.
Funeral services are 2 p.m August 7, 2014, at Lucas
Funeral Home in Keller with internment immediately following
at Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton. The Rev. Jeff Howell
will officiate.
Honorary pallbearers are Leigh W, Davis, Allan J. Davis,
James Paul Harvey, Dick Harvey, Glenn Clayton, Jeff Jeffus,
Terry Wirta. and Frank Atkins,_

Bobby Manuel Dane. 69, of Pilot Point, TX,
passed away Monday, August 4, 2014, in Pilot
Point, He was bom June 16,1945, in Pilot
Point to Jacob "Jake" and Elsie (Wayland)
flyP Dare. Bobby married Kay Bullington On June
ffjfr 25,1966, in Denton, TX.
Bobby was owner of Tri-Tex Cabinets,
formerly Dane’s Custom Cabinets, since 1967. He enjoyed
hunting, race cars, and visiting with his friends and family.
Bobby was known for his outgoing personality and wonderful
sense of humor. He never met a stranger.
He is survived by his spouse, Kay, of Pilot Point: son, Kelly
Dane of Dallas; two daughters, Shea Dane Patterson and
husband Wes of Pilot Point, Allison Dane of Pilot Point; two
grandchildren, Jake Patterson, Emma Grace Patterson;
brother, E. J. Dan© and wife Shirley of Denton; sister, Emma
Perry of Denton; two sisters-in-law, Marcy Pace of Denton,
Nolene Harrell of Euless. He was preceded in death by his
parents; two brothers, Pete Dane, Don Dane; two sisters,
Velda Keith, Lorene Simpson.
Visitation will be held 6:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M., Thursday,
August 7, 2014. at Slay Memorial Chapel of Aubrey. A funeral
service will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, August 6, 2014, at
Midway Baptist Church with Rev, Luther Slay officiating,
Burial will follow at Belew Cemetery in Aubrey, TX. Online

Jamie Franklin Matthews, III
Jamie Franklin Matthews, III, died Sunday,
July 27, 2014, at his home in Denton. Mr.
Matthews was born on August 9, 1958, to
Jamie Franklin Matthews, Jr., and Mary Ellen
(Bush) Matthews. Jamie received his
Associate's degree in Nursing from Cooke
County College in 1984, licensed as an RN.
He also achieved his BA in physics from the University of
North Texas in 1992,
He worked for 30 years as a dedicated emergency room
nurse/EMT and enjoyed teaching classes in Advanced
Cardiac Life Support. He worked in the emergency rooms of
Flow Memorial Hospital, Denton Regional Medical Center,
Parkland Hospital, First Choice Emergency, and most
recently Baylor Emergency Medical Center in Keller, As a
member of the TX-4 Disaster Medical Assistance Team
(DMAT) he was part of the first wave of disaster relief Into
New Orleans after Katrina. Jamie volunteered as an advocate
for the Texas Peer Assistance Program for Nurses.
He married Cynthia Ortega on May 19, 1994, in New
Orleans. LA. Jamie is survived by his wife, Cynthia Matthews,
of Donton; his sister and her husband, Emily Ann© Matthews
and Randolph Raynolds of Brookhaven, MS; his cousins,
Robert Bush (children Kaitlyn and Ian), Amy Matthews, and
Susie Quinney. Other survivors include brother-in-law and his
wife, Christopher and Brenda Ortego of Avon, NY;
sisters-in-law, Melinda Ortego of Lewisville and Rebecca
Kepley of Austin; nephew, Max Ortego-Smith of Austin. He
was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John
Matthews. Jamie was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal
Church.
Funeral services will be held at St. Barnabas Episcopal
Church on Saturday, August 9. at 2 P.M. A memorial service
will also be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family
encourages charitable donations to the American Cancer
Society, Denton Humane Society. Episcopal Relief and
Development, or the charity of your choice.

Godbey and enjoyed 53 years of marriage
before her passing in 2012.
Ed was a longtime resident of Justin. He enjoyed serving
in several capacities in the Justin Youth Association. Ed was
a caring, hardworking, family man. He never met a stranger
and was loved by all who knew him. Ed embraced life with a
smile, open heart, and helping hand. Ed looked for
opportunities to encourage and lift up people no matter the
situation. He will be remembered as a loving and caring
husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend,
A visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Friday,
August 8, 2014. with the funeral service beginning at 10:30
a.m. in the Chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors. Burial will
follow at Justin Cemetery.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara. He is

In ^ew Orleans, Louisiana on February 12,
1/ ‘ 1963, to the union of the late Albert Jones and
jKMAJHpthe late Beverly Firmin Henry,
The dearly departed Desdamona Maria
4 Battiste transitioned from this life on August 4,
2014, at 5:23 a.m. at th© Medical Center of
Lewisville in Lewisville, TX. Affectionately known as Desi, she
leaves behind her best friend and husband, Lance Battiste.
She was mother of 11 children. Desi was involved in both the
spiritual and academic education of each child. Her five boys:
Lance Emanuel, Langston Michael, Laban Jacob, Landon
Matthew, and Lathan John, and six girls: Lauren Nicole,
Lindsey Andre, Leah Rachel, Logan Desdamona, Lael Alexis,
and Lacie Brooke, were all home-educated following God's
vision for the "training up a child in the way it should go".
Later, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Desi extended
her love to adopted daughter Somam Kshatriya (parents:
Baku and Bindu). In choosing to accept Jesus Christ as her
Lord and Savior, Desi extended her love by mentoring and
embracing countless others.
God’s angel is also leaving behind a loving and cohesive
family including her real father, Larry Leo Henry, brothers:
Eric Jones (his wife Vonterrance, nephew Terrance, and
niece Erin), Michael Jones (wife Penny, nephew Quinton,
nieces Paige and Whitney). Albert Jones (wife Hazel, nephew
Andrew, niece Britney), Larry Henry (wife Shanda, nephews
Tyler and Josh) and Chip Jones. Desi was the daughter-in-
law of Lois Rita Dennis Battiste, the sister-in-law of Michael
and Kerry Battiste which includes the late Earl and Adolph
Battiste. She was the mother-in-law of Ciara Gilbert Battiste
(Lane© Jr.) Desi was the niece of Herman Firmin Jr. (wife
Shelia) and Verily Firmin Brooks (husband the late Larry
Brooks) and the cousin of Tyra Brooks Morgan (husband
Welton Jr.), Dalene Brooks Forrest (Eric), Natasha Jones,
Kim Firmin-Williams (husband Wardell), Sabra and Denia
Firmin. Desi was the mother figure, spiritual mentor, aunt,
friend, and cohort to many.
Desdamona is preceded in death by her biological father,
Albert Jones; her mother, Beverly Firmin Henry; her
grandfathers. Herman Firmin, Sr,, and Thomas Jones, Sr.;
grandmothers, Henrietta Firmin and Carrie Jones.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, August 8, 2014, at
Antioch Christian Fellowship of Corinth, Texas, 2020 Post

Leonard Ray Rehlen
Leonard Ray Rehlen, our devoted husband,
? ■ father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and
|JL#*yfl friend, passed away on Monday, August 4,
& ^ 2014. Leonard was bom to Fred Otto Rehlen
M and Audrey Sallstrom on May 15,1935, in
% 'H? Watonga, Oklahoma. Poppy, as he was
known, was devoted lo his wife Rhocfa Mae
Rehlen of Shady Shores, TX. He was a proud father of
Jeffery Rehlen and spouse Vicki of Edwardsvllle, IL, and
Cynthia Aughinbaugh and spouse Steve of Shady Shores.
He was also proud of his grand and great-grandchildren Jim,
Jennifer, Colin, Cami, Jessica, Justin, Ashton, Ryean, and
Miles.
Leonard grew up in western Oklahoma and began his
adult life working th© oil fields of Oklahoma and Texas, He
soon decided that he would leave the dust of Oklahoma and
volunteered for the Army being stationed in Melvin Price
Supply Depot in Granite City, IL. While stationed there he met
a young lady who later became his lifelong companion, who
he loved and adored with all his being. Leonard and Rhoda
moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1963 and raised a family near
the aviation industry that became his career and passion. He
was a scout leader, baseball, and basketball coach. Always
the coach, he relished attending his grandchildren’s sporting
or academic events, always providing support,
encouragement, and enthusiasm.
Upon retirement, he supported many organizations
including Tulsa Air and Space museum, Tulsa Zoo
volunteers, Tulsa International Airport information guides, and
various Tulsa area health services. Later Leonard and Rhoda
moved to live with Cynlhia and Steve Aughinbaugh in a
residential airpark in Shady Shores, and volunteered in a
number of activities around the airpark, church, and
community. Family, travel, and aviation were all high on
Leonard's list of things to do.
He was active with First United Methodist of Denton,
assisting others in many activities. Nanny and Poppy were
always there to lend a helping hand to whoever needed it. He
greatly enjoyed their annual anniversary trip to Las Vegas
and Laughlin, NV: where he and Rhoda always seemed to be
young and full of energy no matter how late the hour. They
traveled the U.S. as well as Switzerland, Mexico, and took an
Alaskan cruise.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
