Phillips set to lead elections office
On Wednesday,
the county elections
commission selected
Frank Phillips, elec-
tions administrator in
Tarrant County, as its
choice to lead the
Denton County elec-
tions department.
Prior to taking the position in Tar-
rant County in 2014, Phillips worked 18
years in Denton County serving as dep-
uty constable in Precinct 3, a chief ad-
ministrator in the Precinct 3 commis-
sioner’s office, as director of administra-
tion to County Judge Mary Horn and
ultimately as the county’s elections ad-
ministrator.
Horn, the elections commission
chairwoman, said the recommendation
along with a suggested annual base sal-
ary of $120,000 and a $7,130 car allow-
ance will be brought to the Commis-
sioners Court for final approval Dec. 6.
Once approval is received, Phillips is ex-
pected to begin work Dec. 7, Horn said.
‘It’s exciting to return here to work,”
back because I know him to be thor- said Phillips, 51. “I’ve always felt not on-
ough, a good manager... and I feel con- ly that Denton County is my home but
fident in his ability to get the office the Denton County government is
where it needs to be and restore the home to me. It’s exciting to work for
credibility and pubhc trust which every- someone who has the best interest of
body on the [commission] felt was very the taxpayers in mind, and I look for-
important to do,” she said.
Despite taking a role in Tarrant
County two years ago, Phillips re-
mained a Denton County resident. He
said he looks forward to returning
home professionally.

Trump picks S.C. Gov.

PALM BEACH, Fla. — President-elect
Donald Trump has chosen South Carolina
Gov. Nikki Haley to serve as U.S. ambassa-
dor to the United Nations and prominent
charter school advocate Betsy DeVos as
his secretary of education, the first women
selected for top-level administration posts
in his new administration.
Both Cabinet-level positions require
Senate confirmation.
While some cheered Haley’s selection,
despite her limited experience on the in-
ternational stage, the DeVos choice faced
criticism even before it was formally an-
nounced Wednesday. Conservatives
warned that DeVos, a longtime Republi-
can donor, previously supported the Com-
mon Core education standards that
Trump railed against during the cam-

You might not be able to tell by looking
at it from Malone Street, but Newton Ray-
zor Elementary School houses an oasis.
In the interior courtyard, the faint odor
of honeysuckle pierces the air as a pond
babbles nearby. Rows of tomatoes and
okra sprout from their stems while peach-
es peek out from beneath their tree leaves.

“Try it,” she says.
It has an earthy taste, coupled with a
hint of garlic. Soon, the asparagus will be-
come part of the school’s weekly donation
to Our Daily Bread, a local soup kitchen
that provides breakfast and lunch six days
