Today's buyers and sellers
are pretty savvy when it
comes to real estate. Whether
we're buying or selling, we
know much more than the
consumers of even 10 years
ago. The incredible reach of
the Internet has helped buy-
ers and sellers get more infor-
mation and educate them-
selves. Even with all that
knowledge, it still makes
sense to rely on the expertise
of a Realtor to make smart de-
cisions.
Why? Buying property is
pretty complicated, and it's
often the biggest investment
consumers will make in their
fetime. New technology,
laws and procedures require
today's buyers and sellers to
be more sophisticated than
ever. That's why most con-
sumers choose a Realtor as
their partner in such a big de-
cision.
However educated today's
consumers are, there are
some who might not realize
that not every person with a
real estate license is a Realtor.
Realtors vs. real estate
licensees
Anyone who sells real es-
tate is a Realtor, right? Wrong!
Only membership in the Na-
tional Association of Realtors
(NAR) allows those with real
estate licenses to use the
term "Realtor." So what's the
difference? Those with real
estate licenses who are not
NAR members are legally al-
lowed to sell real estate;
they're just not bound by the
strict code of ethics and pro-
fessionalism that member-
ship in the National Associa-
tion of Realtors requires.
Hiring a Realtor means
you've retained someone who
is committed to continuing
education, professionalism,
and integrity. A Realtor must
meet higher standards than
an agent who is not a Realtor.
The Code of Ethics and
Standards of Practice was
first adopted in 1913 and has
been amended over the years.
The code assumes that those
conducting a real estate
transaction adhere to a higher
set of standards that those
people who do not pledge to
uphold the same standards.
Realtors are, according to the
code, "zealous to maintain
and improve the standards of
their calling and share with
their fellow Realtors a com-
mon responsibility for its in-
tegrity and honor" - and that
means peace of mind for you.
Texas Realtors are mem-
bers of NAR, the Texas Associ-
ation of Realtors, and a local
association of Realtors. As a
group, Realtors work to make
housing more affordable.
